"Recent correspondence with 2K Games reveals that Civilization IV and Vietcong 2 are both expected to ship on October 25. Frans inquired about the status of Vietcong 2 and was told the game would not get an actual gold announcement like Civilization IV will, but that Pterodon's military shooter sequel is, in fact, complete. A subsequent exchange revealed the planned October 25 release date for both Vietcong 2 and Civilization IV and that the Xbox title Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth will come out that day as well. It's not clear whether Civ IV is complete too, since Firaxis' strategy sequel was used as an example of a game that will merit an official gold announcement."

Can anyone translate that paragraph of rumor into something coherent? All I got out of it was that Civ4 merits an official gold announcement.

CivIV has not gone gold. (Going gold means the game is done and has been shipped to be mass produced).

Of course, it's not necessary that they release a statement that a game has gone gold, but it's a nice way to drum up some publicity. Also, it usually takes a minimum of two weeks to mass produce a game. So if they were planning on making a gold announcement prior to producing the game, one of two conclusions can be drawn:

1. The game is going to be delayed

2. They simply didn't make a gold announcement

Take 2 is really, really, really desperate to artificially boost the financial results of their fiscal year (ending Oct 31) and releasing pretty much their entire November line-up in October.

Take 2 is, after all, just another publisher that is more interested in their own profit than in the happiness of fans, thus, they see that that the fiscal year can be saved by releasing some games a bit earlier, which they do.
