  • Will this time be different ?

VI posted this off-topically in the preview thread, reposting here for correctness.

I remember when civ3 was about to be released, and as I recall yin26 was initially very excited about the new version and put a lot of effort into contributing to The List, until gradually as more info and finally the game itself came out the enthusiasm transformed into frustration and even anger, as the final product was way below his expectations.

Hope that this time will be different. Personally I have spent many happy hours with civ3, but I am no expert player nor perfectionist.

One very positive thing is that it seems the whole development process has been a lot more mature this time around, and it seems that firaxis are not doing the cheapest option, but have genuinely striven to do the best quality job possible. And people like Soren seem to be well up to the job. This together with real beta testing from well-experienced people from Apolyton is also a sign of confidence from Firaxis.

The only downside is if it is as good as it appears what the hell am I going to do about my wife and job?

    Yours worriedly

Yeah, I let myself get burnt out toward the end, over-inflated expectations, then, of course, Firaxis had a melt down. For me, at least, the release of Civ 4 is, once again, all about fun and games. It's clear that Firaxis didn't have a melt-down this time, production values look really good, the attention to MP and modding all scream: LONG SHELF LIFE!

So, what isn't great out of the box will be fixed either by X-packs and/or modders out there. Frankly, this is the most upbeat I've been about Civ in a long, LONG time. My biggest fear remains a weak AI, but we'll get to that soon enough.

So the only other thing to look forward to is a photo of you munching away...

        Forget your wife and job.

That´s the most positive thing I´ve ever heard you say, yin. Are you sure you´re alright?

But yes, I´m very excited too. Especially after reading Markos review.

Ditto, Im looking forward to it and as Ive said before I talked to someone who worked on the game but can still give an objective view and he believes it will at least be a great game and possibly a blockbuster.

Redefine the genre? No. An outstanding and strong contributor? Absolutely.

I don't think it's even possible to redefine any genre now .

I was one who was really excited pre-release Civ3 and became very disappointed after playing it, but I'm back and really excited about Civ 4 and pre-ordered it expecting a great game. I have a good feeling I won't be disappointed this time.

I'll take this as a clue that ICS might be taken care of.

Between you and Mark and Solver's upcoming piece, this is torture. Could either of you beta testers send a CD my way? I'll trade you my dog. She's very cute and cuddly.

Don't send my your dog: Remember, I lived in Korea for 6 years. (Actually, I never ate dog...not on purpose).

And to all you people waiting to see me eat cardboard, your places in heaven just got smaller. You still have places, but they're smaller. The Big Man just sent me a PM about this.

Ah, it's just me saying that you will lose points in Heaven by wanting to see me go through the painful process of eating cardboard. Actually, God (if there is one) probably set this whole thing up from the start. I bet, in fact, God did some of the programming for Civ 4 just to be safe.
