Sea level is an old concept with a new name. It's the same thing as water coverage (amount of land compared to ocean) from previous civ games.

        Nice options

I want a one-city challenge with peace only, no tech-trading and an aggressive AI
This space is empty... or is it?

I would have thought aggressive AI means it is more prone to declare wars - so it is pointless in peace only setting.

I'm a bit at a loss why there's an option for "permanent Peace or War", "Always War" and "Always Peace"

Don't the first and the two latter exclude one another?

My guess is the "Permanent Peace or War" is a Random version of the other too - i.e. you either get Permanent Peace or Permanent War, but don't know until you start playing.

Alternatively, it may mean that the conditions change every set number of turns (e.g. it starts a Permanent Peace, then changes to Total War after 100 turns, etc.)

thanks Martinus for your reply, yes now i understand about
culture flipping, i know what thats like in civ3 conquests
an neighbouring city comes over to join your civ, and later on backflips and goes back to the original civ taking with it extra techs etc.
No i like that option no city flipping.
                cheers

Random WW's... but sounds... challenging, shall we say?

The war/peace thing could mean that you start the game neutral towards every other civ. But once you make peace, you can never declare war on them, and once you declare war, you can never declare peace.

                      I absolutely LOVE two options.

                      - No City Razing
                      - No Technology Trading

There was a work around to achieve the second in Civ3, but the lack of a method to force the first drove me mad, especially wrt scenarios.

Exactly my reason for choosing pointless options
This space is empty... or is it?

I already posted this in MarkG's preview thread, but this is the more appropriate place:

My initial reaction to the game setup screenshot:

                              1) Civ 4 apparently will not include a visual of your choice when it comes to continents/water ratio, and type of land mass(es) such as islands or pangaea -- makes it a little tricky to see ROUGHLY what you're going to get

                              2) What is the shoreline option all about?
A lot of Republicans are not racist, but a lot of racists are Republican.
