  • Noobish Question: Where will all the MP games be played?

Long time lurker here with a noobish question:

Where will all the multiplayer games be played?

    Gamespy?
Will the game have it's own matchmaker browser? (Haven't seen any evidence of this)
Will we just meet here at Apolyton?

I've never played a multiplayer game of Civ or SMAC. Always single player. But with this new game being built from the ground up as a multiplayer game maybe now is the time to dive in.

Sorry if this has been discussed before.
Whatever goes up, better doggon well stay up...

I will play most my MP games in my living room. BYOC.

Off topic: Do we know how many players the game will suport?

      I think it's up to 16 players.

don't know about realtime MP. but for PBEM it's either p2p (sending it further as a save) or via pitboss (server controlling the sending further part)

you can count on that! how else except giving someone else your IP?

i had my first civ MP experience with civ3. didn't like the realtime part (too much rushing, too little military), but PBEM is awesome

Honestly, it depends what you're looking for.

One-stop-shopping, the place to check for Multiplayer is here:

              and our forum here:

(both are only partially open until after release.)

I've heard dirty rumors that Apolyton may be working together with C4P in some capacity regarding multiplayer, but that's just a dirty rumor so far.

PBEM has several thriving communities (I think APO does in fact have a small one of its own.) C4P has one as well, but admittedly, it's not our focus. I'm willing to bet that APO will have a much more active PITBOSS community than C4P, but that's one guy's guess.

Sabre- you should give active MP another try at some point. CIV's will be different, I'm sure - probably a tad less rush-hungry.

Well it sounds like it'll be lots of fun, regardless if it's 12 or 16. I can't remember where I read 16 so I might be wrong. Anyone have a link that has this information?

Edit: If I find a link before anyone else does I'll post it here.

i surely will give it a try! especially around x-mas time

i also wanted to join the civ3 ladder but my application was never confirmed (actually twice) and my PMs to CS stayed unanswered

on terms of real-time MP: if you remember our 2nd game (in the 3rd apolyton civ3 MP tournament) you caught me several times with your experience with lag-timing: wanting to take out your undefended settler, i lost a vet swordsman to your pikeman that you had placed before... even though it was the first move of the turn you've got to teach us these details too

couldn't find it either, even with a search. maybe it will be reactivated and we'll see it...

If you read through the tidbits Markos has posted, you'll discover why this is no longer an issue anymore.

FP, why is it that I can't join?
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Krill - you clicked "Free Signup" here...

And it wouldn't let you join? I just officially signed up myself and sailed right through the process. We've decided - at least until we get some moron who cooks a bunch of games that we have to block again - to convert back to an "open signup" format. No invitation required!
