this is so true! also because a laptop is usually an investment for several years, as laptops are rather pricey. my experience is the same, being stuck with a radeon mobility 9700, which is only just enough for civ4, but below recommended specs. i'd buy a nvidia 6600 (laptop version) if i was to buy a laptop now...

512 ram (333mhz, 2.5v) is at about 60 euros (1 euro is roughly 1 american dollar). this would make total ram 1024mb

1gig ram (333mhz, 2.5v) is about 150 euros. this would make it 1536mb of total ram.

will it make a difference to have 1536mb instead of 1024mb for playing civ4?

what would you do? i just can'T decide...
From what Ive heard going from 512k to 1 gig K is a big jump, there isn't much difference beyond a Gig. I think the important thing is to match up the speeds of the two sticks. And if this is dual channel ram I believe they have to be the same speed and size. But Im not sure.

Won't the game work on minimum specs?

That's good, my budget for laptop + game is very limited. Slowness doesn't bother me much, but not being able to play after buying a new computer will.

As long as you stick to a smaller map and not the max. amount of civs in a game you should be fine. I'm in the same issue here, graphics-wise.

Well, mail me the check to cover the expense of buying the best video card available then.

If I could do that I would have gotten the more expensive card

It's funny to see how we Civ nerds has desperately begun learning the graphics market lately...

                        Hmmm... these are my specs:

                        1.7 Ghz Pentium III
                        512 MB RAM
                        GeForce4 Go 32 MB VRAM

What d'y'all think? Can I run it?

Ah..that's a pretty old CPU you have there, and your memory is only good for smaller maps likely, the Geforce4 Go does support texture shaders according to nVidia, but 32meg of video ram is pretty small these days.

I'd really be looking to trade in your labtop on a newer one.

I would hope so. Smaller maps (don't expect the neuvo TeTurkan with 32 civs to run with proper performance) should go.

                              Civ on Dell laptops

I too will be buying a new laptop to run Civ 4 (my last computer purchase was the week before Civ 3 came out...detect a pattern here?).

I noticed that a poster above said that it would run on the Dell Inspiron 9300 with 128 Mb DDR ATI Radeon Mobility X300.

I was looking at the Dell 6000 - the cheaper model than the 9300 - and was wondering if anyone had that model and could verify that it would work (beta testers?). It would have a 1.56 G chip, 1024 RAM and the same video card - 128 Mb DDR ATI Radeon Mobility X300.

I understand what several posters have said about buying the best laptop video card you can (since it can't be changed), but all I care about is playing Civ 4. And I have to watch the $$...

                              Thanks,
                              Mudhut.

If cash is critical, perhaps wait for reports.

Maybe a 'My laptop plays CIV and these are the specs' thread would be in order?
