One-player strategy - this the first time I hear of such a term.

One player startegy - so no AIs, no opponents ala Sim City, the only question left is how does it fit together with strategy.

the only possible saving grace for the mag is that their article was published sometime in 2004...

in fact, I'm not sure that the Wichita Eagle has the right to repost a Game Informer article. It certainly seems strange that the mag would give away its content for free to a newspaper.

I tried going to Game Informer's website. Interesting experience. They don't have much info. Apparantly you need to be a subscriber to see anything of substance.

Although there, they classify Civ4 as an "action" game.

To us, it is the BEAST.

Don't even get me started about magazines and their approach to strategy games - let's just say ignorance rules the day.

While one would think that the PC gaming world is big enough for everybody, the reality is that gaming press (especially the print press and the big-name media web sites) have focussed their vision on first person shooters, clickfest RTS games, and a smattering of RPG and massive multiplayer online. Strategy is mis-categorized, mis-classified, poorly reported, and otherwise stepped all over.

Civ4 is one of the few titles with enough "clout" to attempt to make it above the strategy media slum, but even it can't get itself all the way out...
