    About the topic:
The tech tree seems rather small.... (not the image). I've recently played into the middle ages of Rise and Rule and I am very impressed with what they did with the tech tree. It got awesome choices to make and the techs you don't need for area advancements are carefully chosen. So you can either invest in a military branch that will not take you further or hop to the next age and race to the superior techs there, but meanwhile have a weaker military. Additionally you have to discover most of the resources. It's really cool.
Civ4's tree looks rather dull in comparison, but what we can see is that the age thing is gone and its built from the ground up. Before I had played Rise and Rule I thought this'd be a good idea, now I am not too sure.

edit: no, I think I am wrong, there is still an age thing, but it seems that advances can have prerequistes over ages as well. Flight and Divine Right are the two advances that don't require anything, but are in the midst of the tree (graph).
Divine Right has Monarchy as well as Theology as pre-req's, and Flight requires Combustion and Physic's. Look in the upper right of each tech to see what the pre-req's are as well as what lines they have drawn to them, since all are required to have been researched before that advance can be discovered.

I like the streamlined effect since otherwise the tech screen would look like spaghetti.

Accually I've been a member for like 3 or 4 years now, I think maybe since pre-Civ3. I know I was definatly around pre-Moo3 and Galciv1.

I just pop my head out once in a while when I have something to say.

Thanks everyone for the positive feedback.

        Well, it's your opinion.

Can you imagine an early tech like Pottery needing no less then three prerequisites?

I think that the lines mean what tech you can research after researching that tech, and the pic in right hand corner is the actual pre-requisite.

That means pottery doesn't have 3 pre-requisites, but it can be researched from agriculture and fishing but not without wheel.

This feature of the tech tree has been introduced in some preview, no idea in which of them.

the picture in the corner is the one required prereq. The lines are either-or.
              - What's that?

              - What's it for?

If it is not fission-->Ecology, the only other thing that might be weird is rifling as a prerequisite for rocketry while there's an OR gate line starting from rifling and passing through Artillery to Rocketry.

I take that to mean "the icon(s) in the upper right corner are the required prereq." There sometimes being more than one.

I was confident that I was right all along. It made sense (and still does, BTW).

Why do some techs have only one optional pre-req? Wouldn't that make them manditory?
