With Civ IV's extream Moding potential and the wild enthusiams from the comunity for doing so I am wondering what we will do to keep things from becoming excessivly fragmented.
The senario I see happening runs something like this. Every person will see something in the game they want changed/improved. They will either make such a mod themselves OR download someone elses. Eventualy we will all be playing what amounts to a different game. Multi-player gaming will become incressingly difficult to set up as consensus on what kind of mod if any will be used. This often results in everyone defaulting to the official release out of shere frustration even though we all acknowlage to be inadiquite. Yet because we play lots of heavily moded single player games our multi-player game will be "off", this would greatly tarnish the fun of modding.
The solution might be to create an official "Poly-mod" that reflects an overall position of the comunity on issues of game balance for our elite play levels. Regularly updated versions of Poly-mod could come out ever few months with features determined by polling. Along side this official mod many groups would ofcorse create a plethora of narrower mods with unique goals, features and additions. Mainstream play could then be conducted on several parrelel mods of high popularity along with unmodified versions for new players.
