  • Suggestion: "leaders" a new role

I know its late to request a new feature, but consider this....

Since the game now has a RPG layer with the introduction of unit promotions, how about a X% chance of a "leader" (either sailor, pilot, or grunt) appearing if it gets destroyed, that can be "attached" to a new unit, which will then have the 'promotions' the old unit had.

There should be a base % chance of it happening, and each additional promotion increases the % of a "leader" appearing.

The "leader" unit, should be invisible and non-combative, otherwise it would get destroyed the same turn.

I don't know about you guys, but it would suck if my unit, which already had 5 upgrades, dies because of 'bad' luck and i lost all its abilities.

you cant have one with out the other

if there is a chance of surviving, there is a chance of dying

    What about retiring a leader:
goes back to your "a" city and teachs that tatic to one class of "unit" and each time its built it gets that bonus at no or slight cost
anti steam and proud of it

CDO ....its OCD in alpha order like it should be

From what I have gathered, there will be fewer cities involved. Fewer cities implies fewer combat units, making them individually more valuable. The promotion system is there so they will have their unique qualities & character, even if the same unit type.

Decision-making as to whether to risk a rare unit made even more valuable by multiple promotions is what makes it a strategy game. There IS no such thing as a free lunch.

I do not like the randomness of it. I would prefer to have some kind of insurance that you can buy (and pay every turn) for a unit. Then, if it is killed, the promotions can be transfered to any other unit, through leader or through some other mechanism...

This could be a good idea, and similar to what happens IRL. Units skilled in a type of warfare return home and teach those skills to other units.
You could have city improvements (or maybe Small Wonders since these will be powerful and maybe be should be restricted to one city per civ) called "Advanced Infantry School", "Naval War College", etc. A unit spending a full turn training in a city with the improvement and a promoted unit would gain a partial promotion of that kind (if that's possible) and a greatly increased chance of gaining the promotion through combat. There could be some sort of "fee" for this advanced training.

I don't like this idea very much. Not only would it add another bit of micromanagement and complexity to both gameplay and the underlying mechanics, it would also mean that warmongering civs can do even better by warmongering more - build a bunch of units, have them fight alot, take the promoted ones back to your cities, build more units, "upgrade" them, take them out to fight alot, take the promoted ones back to your cities, ....

Promotions seem to be random events that make the promoted units stronger. If they are destroyed, despite their increased strength, so be it.
