On the same line of thinking, Cristoforo Colombo was italian (but discovered America sailing for Portugal).

Marco Polo was italian too, but this summer I spent my holiday in Croatia, and a Croatian turistic guide claim Marco Polo's family origin was from a town that now is inside the territory of Croatia

Yeah they say Marco Polo was born in Korcula. They even have his house there. I don't know if they claim that he was ethnically Croatian though.

oh and as we all of course know, colombus didn't discover america - leif ericsson did

Sorry I was out of my mind! I mixed the early proposal of the exploration he did to the king of Portugal and the voyage he did for the Spain), then I reduced the lenght of my post before sending it and cutted it wrong.
Thanks for pointing out my stupid words!

No, they are born and grown up on it.

Why dancers as great artists, but not actors?

I think anybody from the arts community could qualify as long as they were good enough. That includes any writers (including poets), actors, painters, sculpters, playwrights, and, yes, dancers. But not graphic designers.

And philosophers could count as great scientists (?)
Explorers could count as great merchants (??)
And any great religious figures (like Mother Teresa) could be part of the 'great prophet' club, IMO.
