  • What will you sacrifice when you get Civ4?

Seriously. Anyone who is reading this is not a casual gamer. You will probably spend hours upon hours with it, especially during this first month you have it. I think 20 hours\week is a conservative estimate.

What will be the area in your life most affected negatively by your Civ4 obsession? Studies, girlfriend, wife, family, job? And if you fastforward to 5 years from now, picture yourself looking back on the time you spent with Civ4. How does that feel?

Damn. I must have struck a nerve with the community. I thought there would at least be some flames..

But it is something worth thinking about, eh?

I ask this question as someone who has spent a huge portion of my life playing civ series.. time that i wish i could get back. I'm not saying that i didnt get some pleasure out of it. But i'm only now realizing that time is the most precious resource anyone can have. How you prioritize your time and spend it is the most important decision you make in your life. There have been many long stretches of time where playing civ was my #1 priority. But when you look at it objectively, it should have been something like #223 on the list of important things to do..

Ok, now I'll wait for this thread to get closed. Or at least moved to OT (but it really belongs here) .

    Peace.

      LOL

That's actually a scary thought. I probably will be sacraficing procrastination. I put things off untill the last minute anyways so I probably will just spend my time avoiding homework by playing Civ. Other than that everything else should balance out.

5 years from now I will be telling myself that if I could work and go to school full time and still manage to play civ 20 hrs a week then I can certainly do the same for CivV.

Sleep, definitely. And quite some time.

But perhaps Murphy will have mercy upon me and I get bored of the game quite fast.

Yes. Studies, girlfriend, wife, family and job.
In fact, at least in part, Civ III was responsible for my divorce... Thanks, Sid!

I already have a portion of my life devoted to apolyton and gaming.

The thing is I can't consistantly post at apolyton and do serious gaming. I just don't have the time. So I will be sacrificing apolyton. Hold the applause please, I'll be back eventually. I will take the time to look at the strategy threads for civ4.

I will also sacrifice other games. I have 17 full size games on my hard drive. I will probably have to delete one. And it will most likely be civ3. I will also not have time to play games such as SMAC, BG2, and NWN. Or morrowind. I really only have time to devote to one game at at a time.

isn't it a sign of addiction that you do something you know you shouldn't be doing? I have no regrets about my time spent playing civ2, smac, and civ3. It's not like I had a life anyways. If I had a girlfriend, I wouldn't play these games at all. Or at least not very much. I just wouldn't have the time.

Or, hopefully, the inclination in case you had a gf.

I'm so lucky to just have started in the special Nordic thing called "folkehøyskole"(directly translated people's high school), where I go on "IT and programming"(I am completely novice so this will be fun!) and I have lots of people around me interested in games, even one who is (probably) just as nuts on Civ like me. So I think my social life won't be thataffected hopefully. But my spare time will guaranteed be short!

I finally got a girlfriend after a long time, and now I'll have to make sure she understands that I just need to play Civ4... Damn, I was happier without a girlfriend.

For sure. Long time ago, for most of us. What else could justify this kind of discussion in this kind of forum? It's pathetic.
