  • Your first game

knowing what you know about Civ IV what will be the first civ you play as and what settings will you play?

I play my first civ/ctp games as America.
I'll probably start out on the easiest difficulty level with the biggest map (Hopefully an earth map with correct start locations) with as many civs as I can. With the new game speeds, my first game will be an epic game. If there is no earth map which would be disappointing it will be a huge continental map.

Then or in the time between saves I will jump into the eiditor and figure start toying with that.

I have, in the past, just chosen the civ at the top of the list with the intention of eventually playing all of them. If I do pick one specifically, it will probably be Mali since it'll be their first appearance in Civilization. I will pick the easiest setting at 'normal' speed, just to get an idea of how the game works. (I'll try an epic game as my second game.) I'll pick a standard-sized random map to play on.

I really know nothing about this game (I prefer to go in fresh without getting my hopes too high)

I may be america. I've never played as america in Civ3 (aside from the ww2pacific scenario) because I didn't like their traits. Even on paper expansionist looked like a stupid trait. . even before I played the game. My first game was the Aztecs (closest to where I live geographically).

Anyone know if there are traits in this game? and if so, what traits america has? And I really don't like a country called "america". It should be United States . The name of the people should be americans, however.

If the aztecs are in this game, I'll probably play them first on the easiest difficulty. I'm not sure if I'll play the largest map (esp if it has problems like huge maps in civ3). I'll probably play one notch about the standards sized map.

My first game will probably be a random civ on the world map (if it has correct starting positions)
This space is empty... or is it?

now what modern game would release a world map where you couldn't play with the correct starting positions?

I usually play as the Romans in my first game of a new instalment of the Civ series, so Civ IV will probably be no different. Though I've been studying American History at uni this semester, and found it very interesting, so I might be in the mood to try my first game as the Americans this time around.

As for the difficulty, it will probably be the easiest difficulty, so I get the opportunity to learn what's new about this game.

I'll play with the French, at the easiest level, epic mode, normal map.

My 'tradition' is starting with a nordic civ like the celts or vikings, and keep al settings on standard to experience my first game like the creators intended.

I'll take my time to check out everything, reading the civilopedia and generally having a good time. But I'll also keep a small list of notes of things I don't like and after my first game, I'll fire up the Editor and start 'tweaking'. If that's not enough, I'll also start my favourite editor and start wreaking havoc in the game files

I will most likely play a standard game on a standard sized map (depends on what my old computer can handle) with whatever civ/leader traits I like most. I've always had a thing for the Central American civs, so probably either one of them or Mali, since they're new.

There are traits, but they are assigned to the leaders, not the Civs.

ie. Napoleon will be aggressive and will have traits to match. Louis XIV will have culture-related traits

I will choose a civ with leader traits that that I´m used to from Civ3. Ie cultural and somewhat peaceful. Then I will try to

                      a) play the game just as it was Civ III
b)get my ass handed to me by the AI
                      c) figure out why
                      and
                      d) adjust my playing style and strategy accordingly

Probably will cram as much ancient civs in the game as it would allow (for a given mapsize), take one of those civs and get moving.

Probably I will start with the germans or persians, will depend on their traits though...if possible on a world map in warlord mode...

I think I'll play some medium level.
I'll see which nation / leader I'll play. Depends on the profits each leader gives.

I'll play a large world with most possible civilizations.
                              No barbarians.

this may change after I read the manual. (which I'll read quickly before the first game)
