-OR- a time machine that would send a post-it note back in time 6 hours ago to when you sat down to start playing CIV4 to remind you of that 50% Grade exam/paper that you have almost forgotten to the spell of civ... ?

    ... It would help.

My personal idea of time travel in a civ game (or a sci-fi mod/scenario) would be where when a nation gets close to discovering Time Travel, it starts gaining information and material from what the game equates as a probable future. Perhaps gaining the technology necessary to look into the future could mean an increased tech discovery rate. Perhaps when it's combined with other tech (or a national wonder involving such technology), a more physical link could be made with the game's prediction of the future, in which you could bring in a few units or resources or whatever. ...although chances are you'd lose some of those same units later on as they then go back to that earlier time.

Oh, come on, take this idea as its presented. This would be a fun idea for a mod but not a part of a regular game.

                  That would be totally unrealistic.

even SMAC didn't have time travel. And that went far, far into the future.

Well, well, I already use some kind of time travel with Civ III Conquest: it's under the shortcut CTRL+L and let you go back to autosave of last five turns (anything between 250 to 5 years, IIRC, depending on era).
It's disguised as "unfair, losers practice", but it's possible and pay a big reward when you are playing in deep night and almost fall asleep clicking the wrong command... Life is short, enjoy it quickly.

What? Are you kidding? We have *proof* that Time Travel is possible. Want to see it? Every intelligent race that has ever discovered time travel eventually wipes itself, and all traces of its existance, out.

Now, Time Travel, for us, is impossible. The proof is that we are still here.

And, of course, it would be useless in MP games.
There was a Civ style game that shipped with that "feature". Wasn't it CtP?

I know SMAC keeps a set of auto-saved games going back to about 40 turns prior. It's not all 40 turns... It only keeps a subset of the saved games.

Thanks. Of course I was making good use of my time before my ban, just not in the opinion of one particular jerk off.
