Changing your (the leader's) religion?

Can your civ's religion change? Some leaders in history changed their personal religion which led to the nations change. The Romans were one such, though there was some associated strife. Same with Muhammed, when he came along the local religions were overcome. Iirc that was both paganism and christianity were the religions of the persian gulf, with christianity being predominant in what is now saudi.

So, will we be able to convert?

Can religion survive after its founding state is destroyed and go on to re-establish that state? Isreal...
