    I would say:

    Stacked combat: good.

    Infinite rails: keep them.

The Civ and GalCiv Series are the only computer games I will consider playing any time soon.

I don't want it simple, but I agree that it needs to be.

I have this foolish hope that Loren et al. have learned from Civ3 and used some of the best ideas from the old Civ3 List that didn't get into Civ3.

I love discussing this stuff, but I don't think it's too important.

        One thing:

Simple does not necessarily mean cutting choices. Often, something can be included in a simple way, yet represent alot. It's often the "easy to lurn, hard to master" thing that is appreciated by the largest audience.

GalCiv is a bit oriented towards this I think. An example for cIV would be a very simple supply model: it could bring lots of strategy for those who wish to get into it, yet it could work automatically or almost for those who wont bother.
Go GalCiv, go! Go Society, go!

The "Lists" are cluttering up the forum IMHO.
"And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)
          2004 Presidential Candidate
2008 Presidential Candidate (for what its worth)

The reason why the List is not too important to me is exactly because Firaxis already had a working version of the game last February.

            They do?

[q]2) they didnt like civ3 because a lot of the List was read but ignored
            [q]
To be fair, that's just not possible either

            3) they dont think another List is worth the effort

            True, because of 2
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

              Here's my list:

              1. Keep Civ Serious
              2. Depth and Randomisation are key to a lasting game. (look at GTA's). Make it linear and you screw it up.
              3. Improve/add the enviromental graphics and effects
              4. Improve on diplomacy by a hundred fold, it must be absolutely non-linear.
              5. Make the trade aspect as big as the entire game of Civilization 1 itself.

Now you read it and say "no way that's just impossible, don't be silly!"

Then I will say to you "How many games do you want me to list that have exceeded the limits to making games?"

Does Firaxis choose to make a B-Class game or an A-Class game?

Python is a programming language and it was said that it would be possible to use it to change the AI, add events, etc. XML is a data-storing language, the creation and modification of CIV scenario stuff should not be too difficult if you have any idea how tags work. XML is quite easy to understand and edit, especially if you have an editor.

                  4. Sure, why not.

In my opinion, somethign good for the cIV List would be to adapt to Firaxis. It doesn't mean that all these fancy ideas shouldn't be in also, but simply that in parallel we should try to underline what is (1) simple and (2) efficient. Try to bring conceptualization and ideas under this line of thought.

Ideas to do such a thing:

                    - Put a special mention (color, underline, "" smiley...) to ideas deemed simple and efficient.
                    - Put this special mention also to what makes the game more simple without any loss anyway (more userfriendly, interface...).
                    - Make a special section for simple and efficient material.
                    - Take complete models, and keep only the core of it (as much of it) into a childish model.
                    - Mention where it is pertinent this Firaxian context.
                    - others?

From the "Just the facts ma'am" thread I posted a while ago:

Regarding MP: Soren noted that at the time of his presentation (last February), Firaxis had a working MP system already and the Firaxians have been playing 4+ hour games after work. I'd say this is very good news for the MP community indeed!
You don't play 4+ hour games in your free time if it's not playable and fun (though undoubtedly incomplete)...
