Absolutely not. The borders for regions would follow terrain features as much as possible. In other words, the borders of each territory would be a river, or a chain of mountains.

To get a rough idea of what I am talking about. Here is a screenshot of Medieval:total war.

I think that the advantages gained by these kinds of maps can be gained by other ways. For exemple, a better economic can be gained if cities are able to specialize more economically (electronic, whattever).

You're taking out many possibilities with provinces: you cannot really decide to place cities strategically, etc.

I do feel that both tiles and provinces have pros and cons. Discussing the pros and cons of both systems is what this thread is all about.

The provinces in the pic you posted are close to having a uniform shape.
What I meant when I asked about uniform shape is would provinces be allowed to curve most of the way around their neighbors?

              no, I don't think so.

In that case I have nothing against provinces. I just prefer regular polygons because they tile better and I don't care about aesthetics.

'Chariots of War' actually is moving in the direction of using both a tile and province format together within the same game. The main map is actually built as small tiles, but the map has an rich, EU2 feel about it - and the city map is province-style, but at the same time greatly resembles the civ city screen. You still have to allocate and shuffle workers around, but it is in different buildings and not on terrain.

I'd like to see a hex map rather than tile or province.

I'd rather not have a map where random units die from hex spells.

I'd rather not have some tiled old map that seems too provincial.

                          Province-based maps cannot be computer-generated.
The difference between industrial society and information society:
In an industrial society you take a shower when you have come home from work.
In an information society you take a shower before leaving for work.

They can if the programmers are skilled enough. Anything that a computer can be used to do can be done by a sufficiently complex program.

Look at the share-ware game Fracas, its a risk type game with provinces that generates random province maps every game. Its quite challenging, and the AI's no slouch. Get it from the usual sources
