Unit Art NOT Civilopedia Buttons

Anyone know how we create the art used for units in game, and I don't mean the buttons and stuff used in Civilopedia etc. I guess we need some kind of 3D tool.
Anyone any experience of this. (Actually I'd be happy with static images, but I guess it won't do this).

3d Studio Max with the SDK plugins, would probably be the best choice, although Blender can be viable alternative (and happens to be in the toolkit in my sig, along with appropriate plugins).
