  • [SCENARIO] Battle for East Asia

    # Battle for East Asia
    # Civilization 4 (c) 2005 Firaxis Games

    # Created by - Jon 'Trip' Shafer

    --------------------

The date is May, 2016. Domestic troubles have led to a grave weakening of Russia while political tensions between China and Taiwan have grown to a head. The United States has sent a fleet to help the small nation but ended up embroiled in the ensuing clash. China abandoned the UN and has prepared invasions throughout the region in an attempt to gain East Asian and world supremacy. With a powerful military and an ever-growing economy will they be able to dominate the area permanently or will the Allied Powers be able to stop Chinese advance?

    --------------------

There is a distinct lack of many Modern Age scenarios for Civ, and this was one of my motivating factors in deciding to make this scenario. The Modern Age is much better than in any previous Civ game and making it the showcase of a scenario is something I was exited to do. Between aircraft, big navies, mechanized units and yes, nukes, there are a lot of components to the latter part of the game that aren't available anywhere else.

It was also a good chance to test out some new art. Tom Symonds - a Firaxis artist - assisted me in this respect and for this scenario there are two new units: Mobile Artillery and Mobile SAM. Both are quite distinct and fill in a gap in the modern age left by the main game.

In the end though, it comes down to gameplay. It's nice to have a scenario which isn't focused on Europe for a change - instead you can opt to be the Chinese and try to conquer East Asia or one of the Allied nations trying to stop them. This plot existing in a near-future world where a lot of things are unraveling makes for an interesting stage for a massive war. Hopefully this scenario is unique, interesting and fun enough for a variety of people.

    Have fun.

Oh, and if anyone was wondering where the mysterious Mobile Artillery and Mobile SAM came from, this is what they're for.

Ive had a go at this last night as America, i got well and truly beat with only naval assets left.

I managed to capture the North Korean capitol but the Chinese swarmed in on the counter attack and took me out one unit at a time, the jets based in North Koreas other city took out all of my air force which made it impossible for me to weaken the chinese troops.

I was left with a carrier with nothing to carry, a couple of destroyers and 2 land units stuck in Japan

Trip is this scenario possible as America ? if so could you give a few pointers on strategy

I will play again as China and im sure i will have some fun, i also think Japan might be able to do well due to its island status.

Thanks for the scenario though i lost this first attempt it was fun

You just need to wait for reinforcements, that's all.

Since America's production base isn't on the map, they will spawn in Japan and you'll get another fleet every so often. I can't help but think EVERYONE gets their units this way, for the allies its annouced "Russia gets an army" "UN gets an army", but every so often I'll think I have every last Chinese unit dead, then a wave of 8 will hit me out of no where, and 4 more fighters would kamakaze into my circling wall of 8 F16s.....and a couple of advanced gunships would start pillaging whatever improvments the chinese had left in the land I've taken from them.

As the Americans I managed to wipe out the North Koreans, and capture all the coastal cities of China and push into Manchuria, and central China. I was preping to invade Beijing when I ran out of time. I had 500 points during a turn at some point, but it went down to 499 the turn after and then I ran out of time that same turn.

If you want my honest opinion, because of the unnatural flow of units the whole scenario comes off feeling kluncky and unrealistic. I'm left feeling that even though I'm killing units left and right, and knocking down city after city, I'm not really having an "impact" on the war economy, since who knows after what turn will the Chinese suddenly be gifted 10 units from the sky. I'd prefer a scenario that trys to include accurate production bases, at least for the regional powers, and only suppliment the countries with artifical unit influsions if they can't be put on the map. If that's impossible then a more steady flow of units would make much more sense then the huge stacks that suddenly appear now.

When I try to load the mod, I get about 100 xml error messages. Can anyone help me?

Edit: I realized that the last patch I installed was 1.52, not 1.61. So I'll install the new patch and try again.
