Low res version

Just a idea I've had and I'm wondering if it'd be possible.

After yet another abandoned game when things become stupidly slow in the modern ages I wonder- there exists mods that make the game prettier and better looking (blue marble). How about one that makes it uglier and so totally playable on computers with less then 2gb of ram?
Possible?

Unfortunately, the late game slowness is apparently not graphics related. (Same painful slowness whether you have geforce 7800 generation card all the way back to at least 5200). You can also turn the resolution from 1600x1200 down to 1024x768 and see no difference in performance.
