I like to play the standard terra maps, but I've been wondering where the distribution of different terrain types are specified. I mean, where in the files does it say how much land/water you get: How much desert, jungle, grass lands etc.
It's controlled by the terrain generation step of the python. Each map script can control it individually, most use the standard terrain generator for which the exact percentages are hidden in the game code. A few of the scripts like ice age customize their own percentages and placement rules. Have a look at my fair continents script if you'd like to see a more explicitly clear version of how this is done.
