  • mod ideas: xtreme warfare

I had this idea for a long time now, but can't figure out how to actually mod it into game.

For items 1-3, I have attempted to code it into game, but ran to snags.

    1) Force AI to build nukes: I would like to see some nuclear endgame action. My idea was to check if AI has 3000 gold. If they do, force a city to choose a nuke and hurry it (if they can hurry gold and has resource). Unfortunately, there's no way to choose production for city.

    2) Force interceptors to escort: The idea is to protect the bombing runs with any jets on intercept duty. Unfortunately, I don't see any events associated with air combat. There's land combat event, but no air combat.

    3) Despoiling terrain: Any time an improvement is pillaged, there's a chance to despoil the terrain. A despoil terrain acts like a nuclear fallout. Its a feature with either -1 food or -1 production. Farms will despoil into charred fields with fires burning. Cottages and other buildings will despoil into ruins with smokes rising. The idea is to make the land look wartorn after an army ravages trhough it. Unfortunately, there's no Pillage event. I keep seeing pillage messages in the game, but I can't figure out where in the python codes the game actually display the pillage messages. So I can't append to it and add a despoil feature right after pillage.

Here's the rest of the idea I had, but given up since I can't get the above to work.

    4) Oribital Cannon: I really like this one. After completing the spaceship, you don't actually get a spaceship, you get an oribital cannon! The cannon spawns a 'nuke' unit in your capitol city. That's how you use it, use the 'press button' ability of the nuke. The oribital cannon basically acts exactly like a nuke, but you can fire it as often as you like. There's one drawback, everytime you use it, there's a 25% chance of a component failure. If it fails, its removed from the Oribital Cannon, and you need to rebuild the part from scratch.

    5) Fusion Nuke: This is another spectular doomsday weapon. Once the nuke hits its target, it'll keep exploding on a nearby terrain causing a series of uncontrollable chain reaction. One nuke, and its possible the entire continent gets blown to bits! The chance to explode on a nearby terrain suffers from a diminishing return, so sometimes it'll chain react one tile. Other times it'll hit a few more tiles. And once awhile, it'll chain react to cover a huge area.

    6) Bio Bomb: Spies have a small chance of implanting a bio bomb at enemy city. Bio bombs reduces city population and force it to go into quarantine for a short time. Quarantined cities do not work on any tiles and produces nothing. All trade routes gets zero gold. Due to smuggling and people escaping the city, there's a chance of spreading the diesease to other cities. Maybe forcing the whole world into a pandemic. Also, all military units are heavily damaged in quarantined cities. And they cannot move out of it.

    7) Chemical weaponry. Mlilitary units can be promoted to chemical weaponry. Chemical weapons give a unit 50% boost. Any unit with medical promotion is considered chemical immune. Using chemical warfare damages the tile they are fighting on. Adds a despoil feature to any tile they fight in.

    8) War Research: Firaxis really nerfed war. Anyone who goes into war, expect a tech nosedive. This attempt to fix that by giving research points anytime units engages in combat. The civilization gets research points everytime a combat unit does damage, takes damage, kills, or be killed. If the civlization is building military tech, it gets double the bonus!

    9) Insurgency and refugees: When a city is captured or razed, refugees are spawned. Refugess can be added to other cities. Killing refugees add to unhappiness to your ciites. Insurgents will continue to spawn so long as the city is in rebellion. Insurgents are weak, they are just there to add a little spice to war.

10)Religious War: the idea is to force civilizations who are furious with each other, to enter a religious war. The AI is extremely passive in this game, and won't enter any war unless they have military advantages. So what I like to do is, add a unhappy citizen to each city if the civlization is furious at another civilzation of different religion. The only way to remove this unhapiness is to destroy enemy units and raze their cities!

    11) Christian bonus: If using monarchy or lower govement type, cities can get the inqusition. Any inquisited cities have all other religion wiped out at the same time, adding unhappy citizens while killing others off. Also, anytime a christian army captures a city, christianity is automatically spread there.

    12) Islamic bonuses: Okay, this is the religion probably why Firaxis made all relgion in game generic. But I'm not going to do it! Islamic religions gets a lot of war benefits:
    a) If a islamic nation is furious with another, the game will automatic spawn terrorist events at rival nations. Events include building and tile improvement destructions. Any city hit with terrorism gets a unhappy face.
    b) Great prophet can establish a terrorism network as a special ability. The terrorism network increases terrorism activities around the world. The only way to stop it is to capture the city where it is established.
    c) Mujahideen has a chance of spawning for any islamic city who enters into war. They can only spawn in islamic cities.

    13) Taoism and Confuscism bonuses: Since these religion comes in so late, they ought to have some sort of bonuses too. +1 production for taoism. And +1 science for confucisim.

    14) Outskirt farming: Modern cities don't have farms nearby feeding them. Instead, most of the food come from outskirt areas (the countryside). In game terms, they would be farms out of any city radius. If a civilzation gains outskirt farming, any farms outside city radius gets its food added to a global pool which is distributed among the other cities.

I like the idea of adding religion-specific abilities to the various religions, but your ideas for Islam seem based solely on the last 50 years or so of history - Islam does not have a tradition of terrorist attacks, they've become associated with terrorism because there are currently a lot of Muslim countries that lack the ability to wage war conventionally who are still trying to effect change. I'd base the special abilities of Islam on it's entire history, instead of the last half-century or so, and it has a lot of potential.

    1. When Islam is the state religion, gain extra gold from cities that have other religions - Islam has traditionally taxed non-Muslim subjects in their empires more than Muslims. When the Muslims ruled most of the Iberian peninsula, they started taking measures to discourage Christians from converting to Islam because it was cutting into their tax revenue!

    2. Improved relations with Christian and Jewish nations - through most of it's history, Islam was more tolerant of other faiths than most religions, and was particularly tolerant of 'People of the Book'. The penalty for being 'under the sway of a heathen religion' should be halved for Christians and Jews as Muslims believe they are worshipping the same god, but that their religion has been corrupted.

    3. Automatic conversion - if a city is under Muslim control for a certain period of time, other religions have a chance of disappearing from the city as people convert to avoid higher taxation - this will balance #2. Maybe having buildings of other faiths would reduce this chance, allowing Muslim empires to discourage conversion by making it easier for infidels to practice their own faith.

    4. More effective missionaries. Islam's rapid spread has only been rivalled by that of Christianity.

    5. Non-Muslim religious buildings converted to Muslim buildings upon conquest - Muslims frequently convert temples and churches into mosques. Other faiths are known to do this as well, but not as much as the Muslims (see the history of the Hagia Sofia for a good example).

These changes are all based on the complete history of Islam, and I doubt they would be offensive to Muslims.

Of course, if we did add these traits to Islam, we'd need other bonuses for other religions, which could be tricky to balance. Judaism should spread very slowly, at least from the Classical era on (in ancient times they did try to spread the religion and even convert by force), as the religion has traditionally discouraged people from converting - rabbis are required to turn you away three times if you inquire about converting to Judaism before telling you how. Jews should also not benefit from a number of resources that are not kosher - clams, crabs, and pigs.

Oh, I forgot one - if a nation that does not have Islam as it's state religion controls the Muslim holy city, or if a non-Muslim nation attacks the holy city, they would take a huge diplomacy hit with all Muslim nations.
