Was messing around and changed the Huge map size in the XML file WorldInfo to 50X40.

It worked fine but if you do not have a top of the line computer dont try it.

Does anyone know what the number for max number of tiles Civ 4 allows.

I know I updated my SMAC to do 10,000.

    50x40 means 200x160 plots right? That's 32000 tiles.
My computer can start maps in the 25000-30000 range, but that's about it.

But for later game performance, you shouldn't count total tiles, but rather productive tiles. I use land tiles to approximate that, and I estimate the max for a playable game is around 6000 effective tiles for me.

    Does that answer your question?

I read somewhere that there is a limit of 256x256 tiles ...which would be 64x64 plots...or was it that it cant do 64 and limits out at 63?
      Not sure.
