  • Great People list extension

    Many civvers have suggested that the Great People list is too short.

    I think that we should extend it. I suggest the following principles:
    * Women and non-anglosaxons should be represented.
    * Live people are usually controversial, please stick to dead ones.
    * "Merchants" is a broad category, including explorers, economists and entrepreneurs.
    * Founders of in-game religions (Buddha, Jesus etc) should be off the record.

    Here is a starter:

    Prophets
    Saint Birgitta, Gilgamesh, Herophile, David, Ali ibn Abi Taib, Constantine, Martin Luther, Bahá'u'lláh, Joseph Smith, Mother Theresa, Tenzin Gyatso

    Scientists
    Emilie Chatelet, G. W. F. Hegel, Wilhelm Röntgen, Max Planck, Saytendra Nath Bose, Mileva Maric, Lise Meitner

    Engineers
    Marcus Vispanius Agrippa, Theodore Judah, Alfred Nobel, Walter Gropius, J. Robert Oppenheimer

    Merchants
    Sir Francis Drake, Karl Marx, Charles Lindbergh, Friedrich von Hayek,
    Deng Xiaoping, Sir Edmund Hillary

    Artists
    Leos Janocek, Peter Tchaikovsky, Leo Tolstoy, Selma Lagerlöf, Elvis Presley, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Warhol, John Lennon

    Your suggestions?
    The difference between industrial society and information society:
    In an industrial society you take a shower when you have come home from work.
    In an information society you take a shower before leaving for work.

    Optimizer, Moses is in the original list... Do you think he should be removed, as he is the founder of an in-game religion?

    On-topic.. I thought up some. But it might be that some are already in the game but that I forgot, or haven't seen them yet.

    Prophets:
    * Deganawida, Iroquois peacemaker and prophet, 14th cent.
    * St. Boniface, 'Apostle of the Germans', brought Christianity to Northern Germany and the Netherlands, 8th cent.
    * John Calvin, church reformer, 16th cent

    Scientists:
    * Rudolf Diesel, inventor of the Diesel engine, 19th cent.
    * Baruch Spinoza, Dutch philosopher, 17th century
    * René Descartes, French philosopher and mathematician, 17th cent.
    * Ivan Pavlov, Russian psychologist, 19th/20th century

    Engineers:
    * Gustave Eiffel, designer of the Eiffel Tower and the armature of the Statue of Liberty. Maybe the only person that contributed to two wonders of the world?

    Merchants:
    * Adam Smith
    * Jan Tinbergen
    * Milton Friedman
    * James Cook
    * Abel Tasman
    * Henry Hudson

    Artists:
    * Raphael
    * Charles Dickens
    * Miguel de Cervantes

      Great scientists:

      1. Albert Szent-Györgyi, hungarian physiologist awarded with a Nobel Prize in 1937 for the discovery of the C vitamin.

      2. Louis Pasteur already in

      3. John von Neumann (Neumann János) - "Hungarian-born mathematician who made important contributions in quantum physics, functional analysis, set theory, computer science, economics and many other mathematical fields... Virtually every commercially available home computer, microcomputer and supercomputer is a von Neumann machine. " (quoted from wikipedia)

      4. Konrad Zuse: Konrad Zuse was a German engineer and computer pioneer. His greatest achievement was the completion of the first functional tape-stored-program-controlled computer, the Z3, in 1941, claimed to be the "first computer" as such. Could be a great engineer, actually.

      5. John Nash - inventor of the game theory
      6. Michael Faraday- British physicist already in
      7. Dmitri Mendeleev - Chemistry, creator of the periodic table
      8. Is Marconi in? damn, where can I find the list, so that I can see who's already in and who's not?
      Edit: I found a file, but I'm not sure that it is the only one: CIV4GameTextInfos_GreatPeople.xml

      Great artists

      We have like a hundred composers and painters we could choose from.

      Joseph Haydn
      Franz Schubert
      Johann Strauss
      Giuseppe Verdi
      Franz Liszt
      Johann Sebastian Bach
      Richard Wagner
      Franz Joseph Haydn
      Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
      Niccolo Paganini
      Franz Schubert
      Hector Berlioz
      Georges Bizet
      Giacomo Puccini

      I'm sure I forgot twice as many as I've included here.
