  • Mod request: Improving farms

Would it be possible to give farms an additional +1 if it is connected to a fresh water source after the tech civil service?

So then they would have a total of +1 before civil service, +2 before biology & after civil service, and +3 after biology.

It would not only make farms more useful, but also increase the value of fresh water source within the game (lakes + rivers).

    Any takers?

Also make it possible to build farms on hills, which has been done only for thousands of years.

Do you mean included farms that are chained from a fresh water source or only those that are directly in contact with the water? Now, biology gives +1 food if the farm is in contact with fresh water, either directly or as a part of a chain.

        Both.

          Negative...

I mean only farms that are directly next to a fresh water source. When you mouse over a farm that is next to a fresh water source (not chained), it says "fresh water" in the bottom left corner.

Chained farms should stay as they are, providing only a +1 (or +2 with biology).

As for hills, that is an antire different topic and not related to this concept. Modding so that hills have farms is a easy process that only requires a quick change in the XML. My idea, AFAIK, requires a little bit more editing <- but i don't know how, otherwise i would of done it .

Again, the original idea is to allow farms that are direclty next to a fresh water source to have an additional +1 food after the tech civil service. Allow it before that tech, and they become to powerful. Introducing this bonus' with the advent of "chaining" farms, gives a nice balance, IMO.

Water is water. In my opinion availability of water should be threaded different. Who needs rivers in grasslands where all the water you need falls from the sky. Deserts and plains in the opposite need to be irrigated - but are nearly as fertile as grasslands then. Swamps or flood plains have to be de-irrigatet - it's too much water in the soil there.

Another point i dislike is, that there are isolatet tiles never can have access to water. But with the beginning of the industrial era mankind had built pumps and pipelines to transport liquids over great distances and redirected rivers later. So with developement of some tech's the need for natural water should be obsolete and all tiles should be counted as irrigated - as long as you have a farm on it. In this case you will ever get a bonus of +2 per farm. One could increase the time needed to build this improvement on tiles with no access to water to represent the additional time needed to build the pumps and pipes.

No, biology gives +1 across the board. Being irrigated (directly or through a chain) gives them another +1. The farm doesn't have any base bonus.

What amuses me is you can build an aquaduct but you still can't irrigate farmlands without civil service or tiles not connected.

Having an aquaduct should at least make a city a source of water for irrigation. You should be able to irrigate tiles surrounding peaks (melted snow).
