  • [MOD] SD Low Res Textures

After getting fed up with the periodic slowdowns in the game, I went through most of the textures, dramatically reducing their resolution in order to improve both performance and memory usage.

You should experience a tremendous improvement in the early part of a game, however the effect won't be as noticeable in the late game.

There are two sets. One is for regular in-game textures, the other is for the animated leaders. Pick one, both or none. Up to you.

This pack replaces alot of ingame textures with low resolution versions.

This pack is for the leaderheads. I stripped all mipmap detail and made all texture resolutions uniform - before, the chicks had gigantic textures. Catherine, Hatshepsut and Victoria had individual textures that were over 1 mb.

BTW, I'm not sure of the legality of posting these textures. If Apolyton deems them risky, delete the lot.

    makes a difference.
the edges of some tiles are darker due to some reason. that makes the world look like a checker board in places (deserts mostly)
i think some other places, but mostly deserts

for leader heads i use still leaderheads mod and i like that. do not know how yours does

Strange, I don't get teh checkerboard effect. I'll fiddle with some settings later at home, see what gives.

Yep, see it now. Had to zoom in, but once I was aware of it I could see it at even mid zoom.

Its not affecting me gameplay-wise overmuch, but I will look into it.

Meanwhile, last night I discovered that running windowed (with shift windows) on a 16 bit desktop does wonders for late-game stability.

Haven't had a crash ONCE since switching to 16 bit, and that's with lots of alt-tabbing whilst editing python!

            Good mod .
I've noticed considerably performance gains, especially when zooming out.

Just to verify guys, you'll get MASSIVE benefits by running the game under 16 bit. I honestly haven't crashed once so far, and i've been piddling around in the late game for several days now, 1600 AD+.

How do you change it to 16 bit?

and I love the "find it yourself" crap in here. Thanks, we're all as good as you at this and dont need step by step instructions.

If you take the time to make this, be kind enough to tell those of us who are new how to use it.

right-click your desktop, go to properties. Now go to the settings tab, and where it says Color quality, just select 16 bit.

would just like a recommendation on which leaderhead mod would help speed up the game more; this one or the non moving leaderheads. ty.

Non moving leaderheads... no animations involved.

This is good for late game. Even my mid range computer cannot handle the graphics, this helps to speed it up alot.

As for the wonder movies, someone should just make a last picture frame with the data about what it does. No more stuttering movies. Once you seen them once, who cares.

Great work Stone-D, I can testifiy you do good work, on alot of games for anyone wondering. I test these very much for functionality.

Hehe, thanks. I do dabble in quite a few games... nothing majorly massive, just a few small things here and there.

Will these low-res textures work in conjunction with Blue Marble?

To make sure I understand this, if I am seeing horribly sluggish behaviour on large maps, even from turn 1, will setting my system to 16 bit help? How does changing your Windows settings have any effect on this game??
