Would it be possible to tweak the AI to have it protect siege weapons?
Kinda like the "escort" flag Civ3 had. "Don't move units without an escort."

It already protects settlers/workers, so I don't see a problem.
As to how... *shrug* -
Not always. I had in one of my games a situation where the AI unloaded a transport on my teritorry with 2 catapults and one axeman (AFAIR) and then he splitted them up to pillage, leaving the catapults alone.
It's an entirely different matter that I lost a swordman attacking one of the unprotected catapults

Seige weapons can defend themselves better now. In any case, a hard-lined rule to "always" provide an escourt probably isn't good. More of a "escort if you can/if taking into dangerous territory". I know I don't always escourt my seige weapons, and one doesn't always need to.
