  • Civ4 editting tools

    I am trying to create a Wheel of Time scenario. I mae many many maps and scenarios for Civ3 some of which were used in large tournaments, so I am not new to this (I also have made map mods for games like RTW and other difficult to mod games)

    Is it just me or are the scenario creation tools for Civ4 vastly worse than the ones for Civ3? I have read quite a few threads in here and am still having trouble even making a map (not to mention the fact that I cannot even save it as a map without setting the Difficulty and civilizations etc.)

    In Civ3 making the map would have taken maybe 3 or 4 hours if I wanted to do a good job. It was super easy and straightforward. Some of the setup tools for civilizations etc. required a bit of practice and knowledge, but making a map was as easy as could be.

    I have been futzing with various utilities and the world buidler for several nights in a row now and have made no progress? Everytime I try to modify coastline the new land looks sunken and there are no grid numbers for making accurate plots, moreover saving reloading/buffering etc. is a real pain.

    Am I doing something wrong, or do I just need to forget about this for a few months until there is some fan based mapmaking tools they doesn't make it a struggle just to make a damn map.

    um, not having used it I don't know if it will work for you, but I saw a downloadable map editor called Atlas. I think it was on the second page of the creation&files page...

      Well, the game did just come out a month ago, so that's a big reason why the modding tools and even the techniques are limited to some extent. Heck the SDK isn't even out yet. Civ3 modding got better, even the Firaxis-made editor was improved a lot between Vanilla-PTW-Conquests...IIRC

        Nope, Atlas is more of a map generator than an editor. You can use it to make blank or sketchy maps of the size you want though.

        For an editor I recommend YAME or MapView

        @Becephalus:
        The land looking sunken is no real problem. It just looks freaky. When you save and then reload the map, it properly displays as ordinary water.

        Check out my Atlas Map Generator

        Generate, preview and play Civ IV maps of any size with the alternative Map Generator

          I guess I'm wrong, but I thought CIV4 was gonna come with some editors.
          We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI

            wouldn't it be cool if.......

            there was a real world map generator where you start from a basic map of the world, then use the mouse to drag and create a box around the area you want to map. then choose the size and then the outline would be there and all you'd need to do is fill in terrain according to the time period you wanted.
