Indicates of what type something is: science, industrial, military, etc. This has a number of applications, for example Great People can give a free tech of their own type: Great Prophets give religious techs, Great Engineers industrial ones, etc. It also indicates how likely the AI personalities are to research techs and build buildings and wonders of specific types (i.e. Genghis will focus on military stuff, Isabella more on religious things), etc.

It indicates how strong a trait is if there are several. For example, Asoka has religion 5 and science 2, so he focuses on religion and science, but more on the former than on the latter.
