veteran soldiers can't attack native villages?

veteran soldiers can't attack native villages?

Hi all,
I'm playing a game as English and want to give my soldiers some experience before declaring independance, so I started to attack some natives (all other colonial cities have fortresses.. *sigh*

Anyway, I discovered that I can attack with my militia and cannons. But my veteran soldiers aren't able to attack a native settlement...
What is this all about?
Anyone else noticed this?

You have to give the soldier the soldier profession before you can attack, if that's not it, then i'm stumped too
