Looks like he always attacks nearest city with fortress while there are smaller less defended cities deeper in the continent. Ah, and he does not have enough ships to transfer all of his ground troops and after unloading the troops his ships do not sail back to Europe.

Yeah, the king always shows up on the east coast and always attacks a coastal town first. I usually make one coastal town and build everything else inland or on the west coast that way when it is time for independence I can mass everything around one city.
