Hello guys,
I used to play old col. like hell, achieving crazy scores on viceroy -think I had amongst best 5 or so... but that's past and it's almost over 8 years ago, since I got my best score.
Tried to play this new Col. now. My first game on conquestador on epic speed. I did the mistake trying to play like my old col. keeping tax at 0%.
I did piss off the King though, and in the end he had 600 regs, 350 drags, 300 Arts and 33 Man-o-Wars...
By the end I realized tax is asctually good at this col., as you get significant bonuses from LBs, so I managed to increase it around 50% in the end (1750s).
My force was a handfull of 55 drags, 15 arts and 22 ships of the line... In the end guess who won...
By the end of war, I had 7 ships (kept spamming them) of the line 80 dragoons and 25 arts.
The King had 300 regs, 200 drags, 200 arts and 0 Man-o-war ships.....
Of course, I did my good old strategy 12 cities with 5 good food farms, 5 tool farms, 4 education points, 2 muskets farms, 2 ship farms...
I did hell a lot of LBs, and got a hell a lot of fathers to support me!
Unfortunately, I could not trade rum, and cloths as I did the mistake to boycott them very early. So my eco relied on trade goods, cigars, rum and cloths with natives and other europians mostly. I could only trade cigars with the King. That was a big blunder at my side (playing like old col..., but hey ho first game!).
I had about 50 wagon trains working for my eco boom.
So what I want to say is, what I read here is revolting. Don't play like a n00b. Don't care about 1 or 2 cities strategies.
Build LBs and get as many fathers as possible! Build iron farms (400+ tools per turn)! Get a huge fleet! Own the King in the sea, so he cannot bring his huge force altogether! Sacrifice your n00bships, and let your flagships get promotions (In the end my 2 main flagships could take a man-o-war at 80+%)! Own the n00bs who dare to land with your dragoons!
If I knew I would have never spent tools on art..., but his huge force, and my inexperience in civ. col., scared me off. So I tried to do the best I could... I wish I had ships instead all of this wasted arti.
Ah... another crucial point, as King's forces are predictable, do not exceed 2-3 ports, which are close together...
It's all about tool industry, education and food farms.
Next stop: Viceroy.
