Go into the GameSpeedInfo xml file and increase the number of turns in the last turn group (it will say something like number of years per turn - 1 number of turns - 200, or whatever; increase the second number, as years/turn is irrelevant).

Also, try playing on epic or marathon. You might find that works well enough for you.

personally, i don't want to "win". i like the game mechanics so i like building up my colony and interacting with the AI players. what i don't like is 34 turns to go! i don't know what others have seen but once 300 turns expired on my game i got some sort of Victory in Europe (??) and got to continue but with this big (annoying) Victory in Europe splashed across the screen for the rest of the game. i guess what i'm saying is i don't like being forced to scramble about gathering men and arms and defensive structures so i can declare independence (and fail like the rest of you! ) in 300 turns. i don't think i really want sandbox but i don't like the 300 turn "time limit".

Exactly. I figure I'll set the time limit to some ridiculously high number. That way I can declare when I'm ready.

yah, it's really unexpected and kind of gross -- like those 'you haven't registered this software popups. but, you can edit it away in one of the xml files... i forget which, but if you can't find it i'll look for it.

Tried that. Didn't work. Changed the default of 300 to 900. Game still said victory in 300 turns.

            From CIV4GameSpeedInfo.xml

            iTurnsPerIncrement = 900

wasn't it just suggested so that the game would 'seem longer' to you? the game length must be hard-coded -- i don't have soft-ice or any way to back-engineer, but looking at the exe file might show something about game length? i don't know. i do know that it bothers me very much too, but then the game idea that all colonial revolutions are like the american revolution is more bothersome.

or, maybe it's the usual with these games -- that they're boxed for a casual game crowd who only want a different flavor of Monopoly?

I won my first game on easiest! YAY! Surprisingly, it felt like a pretty easy victory. I actually won with about 60 turns to spare. I had about 5 colonies, 2 coastal and 3 inland. I built them up first without producing any liberty bells. I made a beeline for the warehouse expansion. I focused on producing ore, wood, tools and guns. I waited to about turn 200 when my colonies had a good stockpile of guns and then switched as many people as possible to producing liberty bells all at once. I quickly shot up from 0% to 50% rebel sentiment and then declared independance. The REF was about 26 soldiers, 10 dragoons, 4 artillery and 6 warships. I had 21 soldiers, 2 dragoons and 3 artillery. I let the King take Jamestown and retreated all my military to Plymouth which was inland. I had several really good FF which gave my troops a lot of free promotions. The REF moved inland. I used my units in Plymouth and attacked the REF stack first. I also had a stack of soldiers in a forest tile and attacked the REF stack. All my colonies had 100% rebel sentiment. I held Plymouth and repulsed several offensives. THE REF also landed a few units next to Barbados, my other coastal colony. I attacked the stack and repulsed the offensive. I then counterattacked and retook Jamestown, eliminating the last REF ground unit. Victory!
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

I just won my first game, on the second lowest difficulty.

                  It took me three tries.

First game I didn't even get my revolution started, second game got killed by the REF, third game, finally won.

                  Very awesome game.

Sounds right to me - were you definitely using that file, and were you definitely changing the right gamespeed? The first gamespeed in the .xml is Quick, don't forget.

I changed the entry for "Normal" speed. Quick doesn't last for 300 turns, does it?

Is it possible to do what the user above said? To have "endless" turns so you can choose to declare independence when you want?

The second thing i wonder is it possible to cap the taxes at a certain percent? I wouldnt mind the insane high taxes if you could actually have a half decent trade system with the natives/fellow europeans but its horrible the way it is now. You cant even create trade routes with natives? Was trying to sell 916 cigars and sailed across the map and no one wanted to buy them.. got offers for 120 gold? I mean seriously..

Well, set it to 1200 or whatnot, you'll never get to that turn count. But, I'd expect the AI to win by then ...
