  • Dales REF reduction mod

I'm going to make a mod today that will help the player have more control over the size of the REF that they will face during the WoI.

    It will change the following:

At present, except for tax hikes any request from the King can be rejected with zero negative effect. The correct answer for these is to say "No" each and every time. Because by saying "Yes" you lose out (monetarily).

This mod will change that so that if you say "No" there is no change (no negative effect to rejecting the King). But if you say "Yes" and pay the request, then the REF will be reduced accordingly (no lower than the beginning amount of REF). Think of it as the King getting more at ease with you since you gave into his ridiculous request. "You can kiss my pinky for 150 gold".

    Therefore:
    - The player can influence the size of the REF (outside of the bells mechanic) by paying the King's requests.
    - Both options "Yes" and "No" are now equaly viable (instead of always saying "No" being the right answer).

This fixes the requests, and helps to alleviate the REF size issue.

I'll post the DLL when it's ready.

Dale - thanks for thinking 'outside' the box that has brought so much discontent...

This is a good start and addresses at least one of the issues of the REF. Again - thanks...

Maybe - REF scalability for difficulty level will be next?

I have a feeling the REF should scale down a bit in general, but this is definitely a good way to deal with it in addition to that.

Dale, i'll be home in an hour or two, will you be on for a bit of a chat?

What does REF stand for? Essentially your saying with your mod, if you pay the king off, he wont bother you again as soon? I thought that was the way it was now. Nice to learn otherwise, nicer to learn it'll be fixed in your mod.

                Hmmm...

While I approve of lowering the buildup of the REF, and also doing something about those useless "kiss my pinky" messages, I'm just not sure about the logic of linking them.

Of course, I have no better idea myself, so you have my full support.

REF is the Royal Expeditionary Force. It's the King's army he invades you with when you have the DoI.

                    Hey Dale!

Have you given any thought to what happens with the 50% that is taxed when you use the king's galleons to move treasure?

In the old game, I seem to recall rather alarming additions to the REF when you allowed the king to take 1k gold on those transactions. I know we're trying to limit the REF with how large it gets in this game, but any thoughts about that?

I won't be changing that. I like how it works now.

I think the REF definately should be linked to liberty bells, but I agree that the rate the king adds to the REF gets really big really fast. So this mod seems to be a way to fix that by simply buying off the king.

"Oh, don't mind these independence newspapers and rallies. We are loyal! Here, look at all the gold we pooled for you to buy a new wig, your majesty."

Any updates on progress for your mod, Dale?

(My main gripe with Civ4Col is the maps and european AI's, my only finished game with WoI I narrowly won by using the huge terrain bonuses and the REF was outnumbering me by 3:1, a great medic general helped. But the maps.. you always start down south, they are too small at larger sizes. I usually take my soldier and hunt down the other europeans, take their pioneers and raze/grab their colonies if close, if they resurrect then they are so far behind it's not even funny.)

Still testing, but early results are promising.

...and in light of the recent revelations about city garrisons not accumulating rebel sentiment, I think I may now have a better idea.

The REF may not, in fact, need to be scaled down, provided that soldiers garrisoned within towns are affected by liberty bell production. This, to me, seems like a much more organic solution to the REF issue.

The "kiss my pinky" demands could be more obviously/explicitly tied to tax hikes, or perhaps even to European immigration: refuse to pay, and you will require more crosses and/or gold to get immigrants. Or, refuse to pay and the buy price goes up for guns, and sell price goes down for cigars/rum/cloth/etc...

But then you're stuck with only one path to victory. That's my big problem with this.
