My first game

So I did a quick game as England last night, on the next lowest difficulity level. It's been a while since I played Col much, so I'm rusty, but I had no chance. I built up three large colonies. Two of them was around at 100-90 turns left capable of making guns and artillery. But I was screwed. 1) Privateers sunk my ships all the time, and as a result I was practically unable to trade much with Europe, and therefore unable to buy ships that wasn't sunk at arrival in the new world. The king was also overly paranoid, when I had 50% liberty bells, the guy had more than 100 units compared to my 15-20 or so. And almost all of those was within the last few turns, we were equals most of the game.

I think I need help.
