A couple of things of note for software and preorders, and avaibility of games on release date:

      All this is US only

      1. Generally Pre-Order w the Free Shipping option usally results in it taking longer to get the game than waiting for it to come out and then driving to your local store.

      2. Unlike DVDs, the stores generally don't get the games early though and so it is often not until the day after the offical release that the game is widely advaible in stores. (This will vary by location)

      3. Some online stores now have free price insurance on Pre-orders; (e.g. if the price goes down after you pre-ordered but before release date you'll get charged the new lower rate)

      4. Some local stores have routine 10% discount on newly released games & DVDs thru the Friday of release.

I think this is manufacturer specific, and while some folks don't prioritize D2D getting the patch info, 2KGames (or at least firaxis) seems very good at it.

I do think the pricing structure needs to be looked at eventually, but I think it's unrealistic to expect it to be cheaper in the short term (as it is not a big enough model yet to realize significant cost saving). It certainly should be cheaper, eventually, and probably not that far down the road, I'd think. I don't think it's a reason to choose retail over D2D, however - just not a reason to choose D2D over Retail, either, unless you live in Chicago and have a 10.75% sales tax
I'm glad this works well for Civ. That's good news. In the end, I think getting rid of the brick and mortar overhead and (mostly) inconvenience is where things will go. Sort of like what has happened with music. I still buy the occasional CD, but I'm sold on iTunes and burning back ups. Much smaller files sizes, of course, so this is easier for music than for games, but I hope we get to that level of ease and price point for games some time soon.

I've had very poor experiences when pre-ordering and having it shipped to the house.

For the most part, with 3 EB Games here, 2 Walmarts, a Best Buy, a Target and couple other sites, we have many options available in jacksonville NC

Im gonna pick it up at EB
