  • Tech Tree... *sigh*

Seriously, how the hell do you actually find anything? There seems to be little or no actually sensible linking to what each tech is going to actually do. I spent about 5 minutes trying to find which tech would give me an air unit yesterday, because there was no obvious direction to take. The 3 techs within each branch actually makes things worse I think.

Oh and while I'm on the subject, what's the point in having Affinities if you unlock them from tech? Are we going to not research a ton of tech because they aren't the affinity we're aiming for? It just seems like a really arbitrary way of doing things, when it could all just be based around your actual playstyle.

Yes. I was disappointed that my mass alien genocide nest smash thunderdome didn't increase my purity after completing the "kill two nests" quest. I had all the AI leaders getting mad at me for clearing miasma and exterminating aliens but my purity doesn't go up unless I do quests or research leaf techs, wtf?

And it wasn't obvious at first that you are basically supposed to do the first two rings of techs period. There are certain things you just have to have, to mine floatstone or whatever for instance.

Excavations can also lead to Affinity, and there's the free Affinity levels in the Virtues. But yah, it's mostly Techs. Which is good IMO, because it leads to wildly different beelines based on which Affinity you are going for, even if eventually you'll fill in many of the same basic techs each game.

The tech tree is a bit confusing.

You don't need the ability to mine floatstone if you don't want floatstone.
As of the latest patch, previous versions of humanity are no longer supported.

Well Terrascapes can be useful, and it's a gateway to some awesome things (+1P from Generators, Weather Controllers, Orbital Fabricators)

they're super expensive though. not only do they sap what energy the tile produces, but thy cost six more. i found them most useful when used in conjunction with the doodads that increase the desert/tundra food sources.

Terrascapes are great if you get to the bottom of the prosperity virtue tree apparently.

Idk, i saw a production satellite somewhere in the tech tree once. Spent 15 minutes trying to find it one way or the other for the second time, no luck so far... I think even Civ 4: Caveman to Cosmos tech tree with more than 1000 techs was easier to navigate...

4X space games have been doing these tech webs for awhile now. You would think they would have learned from them because they all pretty much relay information better than BE does.

I still think MoO2 did it best. Not strictly a web, but some similar ideas.
