Why does contacting aliens mean victory?

Good question. What the designers have said so far is that the victory conditions are supposed to represent the next evolution of humankind. The aliens you're contacting are supposed to be some sort of progenitor or builder species, so contacting them probably means they swoop in and reveal the secrets of the universe or let humanity into the Galactic Council or something like that. We don't know the details at this point, and my guess is we won't until someone has played and won that way because it's part of the story.

Someone told me there were also launches from Berrys Creek, New York and the Périférie in Paris.

Perhaps people were supposed to be so desperate to escape the Civ5 release Big Mistake they built right in town and didn't care what was destroyed in the launch...

I mean I surmise that it's supposed to be flooded future Giza w/future Cairo in the background -the remaining finishing cap on the one pyramid is rather distinctive- so what happened to the big one? It ought to be the last one to go, not the first, even by your explanation... QED; someone made off with it.
