  • Civ 7 is now good ...enough.

    So yeah.

Typically, the game took a few years to get to a playable state but that should surprise no one here. I mean, we remember how contentious Civ 3 was when it came out. For me, the gameplay sits a solid 6 out of 10. There's a lot of rough edges to sand over, and honestly a lot of work to still be done. But what's there is still compelling.

As of right now, I've started and finished two games this week, and started a third.

Pros: the game is gorgeous. Combat is fun. The leaders all have very distinct personalities, and it matters for gameplay. and at this point, i've found myself "just one more turn" -ing my entire day away. Towns also work really well, within the scope of the game.

This is fine: Ages are fine, but I think it may have been a less controversial sell to civ fans if you picked a civlization, and then had to choose different leaders for each age. the endgame has undergone a lot of change, and while it's possible to win a game in the Exploration Age, it's actually challenging.

Cons: The game is gorgeous, but visual clarity is bad. Urban sprawl tends to dominate the exploration age, and it's even worse in the Modern age. there's a counterintuitive divide between urban and rural population. Overbuilding and "ageless/warehouse" buildings are also counter-intuitive. Religion desperately needs retuning. I feel like two buildings per district is far too little. I'd rather see more buildings in a district and less reliance on adjacency bonuses.

But yeah Civ 7's good now. Should you pay full price? Absolutely not. Wait for it to go on sale. but it's definitely worth looking into at this point, and honestly can only get better.
I wasn't born with enough middle fingers.
