Arnold - Serve Time in Jail Before Office

Arnold says pot should be legal only for medicinal reasons. Okay, then shouldn't he serve time in jail before running for office? In the movie "Pumping Iron", Arnold is seen smoking a joint. The same challenge applies to the President and every other politician who has used illegal drugs while supporting prohibition. I'm tired of these people getting a free ride from the media on their hypocrisy...

It was a movie -- the scene that you describe? If the prop was just an imitation joint and not an actual one, then he didn't really smoke a joint.

Well, Arnold is Arnold.. that inhaling thing made me laugh again though

. I can't believe how someone could say that with straight face. It's like saying 'Yes I did coke, but I couldn't tell the effects because I was so drunk at the time'. Or blaming being drunk for their deeds.. people should take the responsibility. Though I don't think that should make presidency for someone impossible.

the small matter of " proof"-- no one could prove that the substance was not merely some home-rolled tobacco-- Without the substance there is nothing there

Also, unless there were regognizable landmarks or you could get someone to testify as to the location, you might even be lacking evidence that any offense occurred in the US

Lastly-- do people actually go to JAIL in the US for smoking pot-- I thought it would be a fine at worst

Which does not absolve someone of hypocrisy.

Fluuber - it was pot and Arnold said so and has admitted "inhaling" in the past.

Pekka - I didn't say Arnold or anyone else should be prohibited from holding office, just that they should accept for themselves what they want for others. He, Dubya, and every other politician who has used illegal drugs should take their own medicine before dishing it out to others. If I murdered someone, it isn't hypocrisy for me to want other murderers punished as long as I'm punished too...

Berz, I doubt Arnold is vehemently anti-pot... judging from his history, I think he probably would support full legalization, but he has to pander... he is a Republican, remember...

But pot use may be, certainly it's subject to judicial proceedings. But I have to withdraw my accusation since I lack the moral authority to make it, i.e., I'm being hypocritical. I've done plenty of things for which I was not punished and never turned myself in while supporting the illegality of those actions...

My theory all along is that this is campaign is valuable for the very reason that all this crap (his father, pot smoking, adultery) becomes neutralized for the next campaign. It gives him a chance to have the press air his dirty laundry in a campaign in which there is little shame if he loses.

I don't know John, if he can't win in this situation, I doubt he could win in a regular election cycle. Alot depends on what McClintock does since he's taking a potential ~dozen points from Arnie. If Cruz wins and the situation deteriorates, Mary Carey might stand a chance

Oh, I think that if he loses this he can still easily run for Mayor of LA, Gov in 2006, or (possibly, depending upon the Constitution) Representative or Senator even if he loses this one. Davis is successfully pitching the upcoming vote as a referendum on the recall process itself, and it looks like (from here in TN at least) that his terms are sticking.
