OTTAWA - A Liberal MP has apologized for saying about Americans: "I hate those bastards."

MP Carolyn Parrish was speaking to reporters about Canada's diplomatic initiative on Iraq. At the end of her comments Parrish said, "Damn Americans … I hate those bastards."

CBC reporter Susan Lunn who heard Parrish make the comment, says the MP then laughed as she was walking away.

In a written statement issued Wednesday afternoon, Parrish says she made the comments in the heat of the moment in a private conversation. She says they do not reflect her opinion of the American people.

"My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people and they certainly do not reflect the views of the government of Canada," she said in her written statement.

Late last year, the prime minister's communications director, Francoise Ducros, resigned after calling U.S. President George W. Bush "a moron" during a conversation with a reporter in Prague.

Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper said Parrish's comments won't make relations between the two countries any better.

"They don't do Canadians any good – Canadians who are trying to cross the border for business, Canadians who are trying to sell lumber or agricultural products or manufactured goods to the United States," said Harper.

The Prime Minister's Office would only say that Parrish does not speak for the government of Canada.

I wonder why it's so difficult for Canadian politicians to shut their traps when standing in rooms of reporters, particularly with stupid comments like this or the Bush-moron incident.

The Moron Incident, I could understand. That could conceivably slip out during conversation, and the lady who said it wasn't even an elected official.

But this is totally different. What was this MP thinking? Seriously, what good did she think would come saying that, even if she did mean it as a joke?

It would be pathetic if she did.

There is absolutely no reason for her to say that, and you shouldn't be saying **** like that with your closest ally and largest trade partner by far and only neighbour.

Most people in Southern Ontario probably understand that.

Jean Chrétien has been handed another bilateral bombshell while on a foreign mission after a Liberal MP was overheard yesterday complaining about American "bastards."

"Damn Americans. I hate those bastards," Mississauga Centre MP Carolyn Parrish said as she walked away from a caucus meeting.

Parrish had turned away from a gaggle of reporters, laughed, and appeared to make her comment to a CBC TV reporter.
She explained she made the comment to fellow MP Colleen Beaumier who was nearby.

The remark came before the Prime Minister left for today's bilateral meeting with Mexican President Vicente Fox where he was to push a Canadian compromise position at the United Nations Security Council aimed at averting war in Iraq.
Earlier, U.S. President George W. Bush had called Chrétien to discuss the proposal.

He appeared to reject the overture.

The last time the two men met, at the NATO summit in Prague last November, Chrétien's chief spokesperson, Françoise Ducros, was overheard referring to Bush as a "moron."

Ducros subsequently resigned.

Before Chrétien landed in Mexico City, Parrish issued a public apology.

"I deeply regret the comments that I made today in the heat of the moment, in a private conversation," she said in a written statement.

"Unfortunately, these comments were overheard and reported in the national media.

"My comments do not reflect my personal opinion of the American people and they certainly do not reflect the views of the government of Canada."

Canadian Alliance Leader Stephen Harper called the remark "unhelpful."

Bloc Québécois Leader Gilles Duceppe said Parrish's comments should be aimed at the Republican government, not the American people.

The CBC gave too much airtime to Harper and not enough to Duceppe.

Canada should be invited into the European Union.

I agree. We should adopt the Euro. Bush is killing the USD anyways.
