Just so you know, Sneak, the models affected by the "engine sludge" problem are:

    Camry, 4- and 6-cylinder, August 1996 to July 2001
Camry Solara, 4- and 6-cylinder, June 1998 to May 2001
Sienna, July 1997 to May 2001
Avalon, July 1996 to May 2001
    Celica, 4-cylinder, August 1996 to April 1999
Highlander, November 2000 to July 2001
Lexus ES 300, August 1998 to July 2001
Lexus RX 300, January 1998 to July 2001

Notice how it's not in the new Highlanders? Yeah.

Edit: We also haven't had the problem with our 98 V6 Camry, so it's obviously not a big deal in the first place.

As you have probably figured out, the 2003 models do not use those engines.

    Thanks for playing, though.
Yeah, I'm a car salesman at a TOYOTA dealership, smartass. Why would I take offense to knowing more about the product I sell on a daily basis than you do?

BTW, it wasn't the engine type that was the problem, it is the engine material. The same material will be present, ergo, the same liability.

Oh, its in the new Highlanders all right. I've seen it personally. I know how to avoid the problem, but I'm not going to tell.

And Google won't help you either.
Should have bought an Acura if you were going to buy a soccer mom SUV built on a car chassy.

I realize that, Sneak, but as anyone who's actually been to a lot, the Salesmen tend to be not-very-enlightened. It's true for most any mainstream high-priced device, from electronics (computers) to cars.

BTW, it wasn't the engine type that was the problem, it is the engine material. The same material will be present, ergo, the same liability.
Well, if you've got any evidence for this, do feel free to share it -- because Toyota claims to have fixed the problem in engines produced after July 2001. Perhaps you, a car salesman, are accusing them of lying?

You also seemed to imply it was an issue only with the Highlander, when quite clearly it's an issue with almost ALL of their cars.

    You're such an awesome salesman...

2003 Highlanders won't ship to North American dealers until the end of August.

It really is no surprise that this is the best job you could find, you're obviously very qualified.

I've known Supersneak since I've been to Apolyton. He is not your average salesman. He's sort of a poet, an educated man of the letters and the arts, that took on this job for supporting and providing to his lovely wife and child after some cut backs in his previous job.

His job does not describe or define him except for bringing the food on the table as every responsible man would do.

Life has its ups and downs. Brave is the man that goes on.

I'm sorry Asher but when you get to the job market maybe you should speak.

How much do you make a month, chump?

By new, I mean 2002's and the same will go for the 2003.

By Highlander, I meant the one your rich daddy bought.

As far as your knowledge vs. mine, come on down and do a side by side demo on a car, smart guy.

Oh, that's right....you don't have a job to pay for a car...not worth my time.

As far as Toyota lying...no, but they have expanded warranties to cover the issue...that doesn't mean its fixed, does it? Quite the contrary.

paiktis, he's bullshitting, I've done my research.

What's more, is he actually claimed first hand personal experience with the 2003 Highlander models, when they're not going to even hit North American shores until the end of this month. And I don't think he lives in Japan!

Um, how do you figure? The 2002s still used engines produced in 2001 for the most part, Sneak. That's how car years work.

Oh, that's right....you don't have a job to pay for a car...not worth my time.
I have a job, what are you talking about?
It's just that it doesn't make much sense for me to buy my own car, pay my own astronomical insurance, when I can get by with a competent public transit system.

As far as Toyota lying...no, but they have expanded warranties to cover the issue...that doesn't mean its fixed, does it? Quite the contrary.
No, they claimed it was fixed in engines produced after July 2001. They're lying, or you're lying. And considering they'll have to answer to the tune of millions of dollars if they're lying, and you have to answer to no one if you are, I'm going to take the word of Toyota Engineers over a salesman any day.

BTW, Sneak: What's the major new addition to the 2003 Highlander's interior over the 2002?

And as for your secret "I know how to prevent it but I'm not telling" bull, the answer is to change the oil when you're supposed to!

What's more is there's only been 3000 reported cases of this problem out of all Camrys, Solaras, Siennas, Avalons, and Highlanders sold between 1997-2001, or 3M vehicles, that's not very likely. AND this is covered under warranty.

So what was the point of bringing it up?

Now you're telling me how it works? That's rich. That's exactly my point 2001=2002=2003. There is no fundamental change in the engine, merely a recommendation to change your oil more frequently to avoid contamination. They did not put a completely new engine in the vehicle.

What is your job? What are your responsibilities? How much money down do you have? How's your credit rating? Still think you can buy a car in your own name?

No, they claimed it was fixed in engines produced after July 2001. They're lying, or you're lying. And considering they'll have to answer to the tune of millions of dollars if they're lying, and you have to answer to no one if you are, I'm going to take the word of Toyota Engineers over a salesman any day.

If it is fixed, why is there a warranty coverage for that very problem? It can still happen in an engine that is made from aluminum, as that is the major cause of the issue.

BTW, Sneak: What's the major new addition to the 2003 Highlander's interior over the 2002?

There is none. That's because I sell US Toyotas and you live in Canada. If there is a change in your model, I could care less. We will not accept a Canadian vehicle on trade, as it is inferior, not covered by warranty here and seriously lags in re-sale value. Apparently, vehicles of Canadian manufacture are sub-par to US and Japanese vehicles.
See, you didn't even know the fundamental difference from country to country. That's why Google will bite you in your ass...too specific and not intuitive enough.

P-kiss- Thanks...made my day. Nice to know I'm not the only one who thinks Asher is just a silver spoon with delusions of grandeur and not a practical leg to stand on in the world.

I thought it wasn't the engine type itself that was the problem, but the materials?

What is your job? What are your responsibilities?
I do sales, production, and repairs at Voodoo Computers. That's not to say I'm a salesman, though -- I get people coming in with fat wallets and they tell me what they want their computer to do and I design and build them one, and repair them if it breaks.

How much money down do you have?
None of your business. Much of it is going towards paying for my tuition, I'm going to university as well.

    How's your credit rating?
    Perfect so far.

Still think you can buy a car in your own name?
Never said I could buy a car in my own name, Sneaky.

If it is fixed, why is there a warranty coverage for that very problem?
It was a retroactive warranty coverage change to help the people who owned the 1997-2001 car models, Sneak. At least that's what the Wallstreet Journal says:
    http://online.wsj.com/article_email/...675480,00.html

You don't have a CLUE what you're talking about, and you're seriously a car salesman? Typical.
#1) The center console is being added to the 2003 Highlanders
#2) Canadian and US vehicles are nearly identical, the only differences are stuff like mandatory DTR lights in Canada and some seatbelt regulations
#3) The Highlanders are manufactured in Japan, not Canada, and come off the very same factory line as the American ones.

See, you didn't even know the fundamental difference from country to country.
What kind of idiot do you take me for?
Both the American and Canadian versions are getting a center console added in the 2003 models.

And BTW, Asher, I'm not a "car salesman"...I'm the Internet Sales Manager.
So you're not even a car salesman? Grand!

Internet Sales Manager? So what exactly does this entail?

I guess you don't realize that Toyota builds different cars for different markets, eh? For instance, you can get a 2DR Rav4 in Canada, but not here. So they don't all come out of the same mold, Asher. There are variations from build to build.

As for my job and what it entails, let's just say I sell vehicles primarily to Internet based customers who'd rather not deal with "car salesmen".

Actually, you CAN'T get a 2 door Rav4 in Canada.

I drive an '84 Austin Maestro, which cost me 100 quid and looks like it was worth every penny

Runs OK though, failed its MoT due to loads of silly little things, most of which took about 5 minutes to fix except the CV boot which took several days thanks to the worst designed drive shaft and fittings ever

I'm also baby sitting a friends golf convertable (while he is away on a navy excerise), which certainly looks better, although with the weather we're having it ain't much use.

I've also got a Yamaha 250 motorbike which I'm supposed to be doing up and selling for a mate but as he is out of the country for the forseeable future I might just keep that bad boy for uni

Asher, give it up. You've already been exposed as a snot nosed kid who really doesn't know what the Hell he's talking about.

Zkribbler....sell those too. Have you seen the new Special Edition Miatas? I think the Pewter looks nice, but the yellow doesn't do it for me.
The car is too small for me, however...

Imran--forget it. Once Asher has to actually rely on real knowledge in the real world, he's going to be hurting. Probably be the typical loser living in his parent's house forever.
Oh, he still lives there now? Hmmm....that's a bit odd. Isn't University a time for independance? Apron strings too short, Asher?

Why don't you try going to www.toyota.ca?

It clearly lists Rav4 as "4-door 4WD". It's only possible to get the Rav4 in Canada as a 4-door 4WD, they used to make 2-doors years ago but discontinued them.

And considering it was actually *TODAY* that we placed the order for the Highlander, and we testdrove and looked into both the Rav4 and Highlander, I think I'd have some semblance of what's going on. You CANNOT get a 2 door Rav4 in Canada, Sneak is a moron.

On the contrary, Sneak is obviously totally ****ing clueless how Canada fits into the whole auto scene. The fact that he tried to pull a fast one on me by implying the Highlanders have a major problem with "engine sludge" solidifies my opinion of him as a moron.

You must have wax in your ears, Asher.
Is your engine made from a-l-u-m-i-n-u-m? Yes? Well, hey...that's the cause of engine sludge! So unless daddy stepped up and bought a platinum or titanium engine, you can still have sludge? Amazing.

The idea is you change the oil like the owners manual says you should change the oil.

The only reason it's a problem is if you don't take care of your cars.

And even then, 3000 cases out of 3M isn't exactly a major problem, particularly when it's covered under warranty.

Just admit you tried to pull a fast one on me and didn't expect me to know what the hell you were talking about.

Very smooth how you dropped the "2-door Rav4 in Canada" approach, which proved just how clueless you are in the matter.

Oh shush, Hydey. Sneak is one of those pseudo-intellectual idiots online that pretends to be a bright guy. Whenever he actually talks to someone who is even vaguely familiar with the issue he makes an ass out of himself.

There is no major problem with the 2003 Highlander's engine, he made an idiotic comment implying otherwise and even went as far as saying the Highlander is inferior in quality to all of the other Toyotas even though most other Toyotas had the exact same problem.

You cannot get a 2-door Rav4 in Canada: Fact
Both the American and Canadian 2003 Highlanders will add a center console to the interior: Fact

Since Sneak didn't know either of these, what the hell would he know about a technical issue with the engine of a model he's never seen? Might I add he even claimed personal experience with the models which aren't even in North America yet.
