Thumbs down Classical music is for snobs.

I don't understand it: Why is anybody listening to stuff thats 200 years old, or older? I mean it has nothing to do with the world of today, it has been heard over and over.

Baroque music - you can't listen to it longer than 5 minutes, after that you fall asleep (or do the dishes or something like that)

Classical music - Tatatataaaaa. Heard a billion zillion times. Like "Yesterday"

Romantic music. Sounds like a generic Hollywood soundtrack. Maybe it was genuine 150 years ago, but today?

Take Bach's "Art of the Fugue" for example. It's the same stuff over and over, I bet the people who say it's one of their favourite works can't tell which fugue is which.

So I guess it's all for the snobs to show their impressive education.

All of your above quotes are based on your opinion--as shallow and generalized as it is.

You ever heard of the classical plays from ancient Greece? They are still being performed today. And you want to know why? Because the theme of those plays, such as Oedipus, still apply to our contemporary society.

So guess what? The music that you so obviously hate is enjoyed by people who believe that kind of music can still be enjoyed and appreciated by people who have an open mind.
This is where an awesome Mark Twain quote would be, but Apolyton says it would be too many lines. :(

As I sit here listening to Reinhild Runkel and Jessye Norman doing their thing on the last parts of the Chorale movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, you can guess how much I care about your opinion on the subject.

Sure. And some people listen to easy listening supermarket muzak and some like polka. But it's outdated. It doesn't have anything to do with ideas and thoughts of contemporary people. It's old, marble. A lot of the composers wanted to create something stirring, new sounds - these days it's outdated. Millions of musicians did a lot of research on every single note, trying to find out if it has to be played a liitle louder, faster, etc. It's just academic.

I'd rather listen to classical music than listen to someone talking about beating their wife, screwing their girlfriend, doing drugs and getting beaten down by cops, which is all modern music is about.

The things that are outdated now and should be banned since they're old:

    1) The Enligthenment ideals of liberty, freedom, and equality--that is over 250 years old now. Time to get rid of that crap.

    2) Books and literature--that is thousands of years old--let's go back to illiteracy.

    3) Clothes--clothes is millions of years old, so let's all go nude in public every single day.

    4) Beer--that is such an old, outdated beverage, so let's ban that in today's modern world.

Anway, with classical plays, and classical music, it still applies to our contemporary society, whether you like them or not.

Good example! If someone wears 250 years old clothes and drinks beer brewed in a way 500 years ago (which was a real pizwater) you wouldn't say he's a snob?

    Different strokes for different folks.

And after watching some of the most recent Grammy Awards, I can't believe what passes as music today. It is somewhat disturbing to hear some of my favorite classical rock tunes homogeonized as MUSAK.

Just because you listen to classical music every now and then doesn't make you a snob.

I would say the troller is acting like more of snob then those that he is accusing.

My parents listen to classical music... they have more than 500 cds of the stuff... poor me... I still live at home... I wouldn't recommend much of the stuff... except... Gorecki's Symphony of the Sorrowful Songs.

It's outdated... is there much music that isn't... Common, admit it... you still listen to Elvis and the Beatles

    Warning! Snobbery ahead!

I listen to Classical because I'm tired of the boring repetitiveness and simplicity of modern music. I remember reading somewhere that 70+% of modern "rock" songs are written in the key of C. Hell, why should any of us bother with such compositionally illiterate crap?

And don't tell me it's for the lyrics. You ever read the stuff straight-up? It's like a poetry symposium comprised of angst-ridden, horny tenth graders.

It's scary when I come across a person who believes that it is ok to destroy or disregard products of cultural achievements just because they are "old."

Should we destroy all paintings, sculptures, and architectural designs that are over 150 years old??

Should we do away with the ideals of freedom, liberty, and equality just because those ideas and concepts are old??

Should we do away with the monotheistic religions that have provided a basis for further cultural development just because they are old??

Should we do away with theater plays and forms of music that is over 150 years old, just because they are, well, "old?"

No, we should never do such outrageous things, because all of these products of cultural achievements are applicable to our contemporary society.

Ya know, I'm sure I'd listen to more modern music if there were more as good as JS Bach.

But 90% of modern music, is, in the immortal words of Grandpa Simpson, 'unadulterated pap'.

And the more modern it gets, the worse it tends to get (with the exception of early Oasis, early Who, early U2, Queen, most Beatles, original CCR and a few others)

Why would I listen to some punk whine about modern bullshit, when I can have the immortal strains of the Little Fuge?
