Reports: Former Patriots linebacker Junior Seau dead
Print Posted by Staff May 2, 2012 02:15 PM

Former Patriots linebacker Junior Seau is reportedly dead after committing suicide, according to multiple reports. (Matthew J. Lee / Globe file photo)

    By Zuri Berry, Boston.com Staff

Former football player Junior Seau was found dead in his home, according to a report from TMZ.
Police are investigating a shooting at the former New England Patriot and San Diego Charger's home in Oceanside, Calif., according to multiple reports.

Seau, whose full name is Tiaina Baul Seau Jr., last played for the Patriots in 2009.

According to multiple reports, Seau committed suicide, found by a housekeeper at his beachfront home with a gunshot chest

The Charges released a statement saying they had not been informed of his death and that "we pray he's OK."

Seau's All-Pro NFL career spanned 19 seasons. He was drafted No. 5 overall in the 1990 draft out of the University of Southern California, and played 12 stellar seasons for the San Diego Chargers. He was named an all-pro 10 times and to the Pro Bowl all 12 years he was with the Chargers. In 1994, he was named the AFC Player of the Year.

In October 2010, problems in Seau's personal life surfaced when he drove his SUV off an embankment in Carlsbad, Calif., and was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Seau told police he fell asleep hours after he was arrested on a felony domestic violence allegation and released.

In 2003, Seau was traded to the Miami Dolphins, but was released in March 2006. He was limited in his time with the Dolphins because of torn pectoral muscle.

Seau announced his retirement from football in 2006, but then days later was picked up by the Patriots. He went on to start 10 of 11 games played in the 2006 season before breaking his arm. He announced his intention to retire again in 2010.

In his career, he tallied 1,849 tackles and 56.5 sacks.

His burger place sucked and was over priced. Still, as a former sports star he didn't have to actually run anything and instead they just paid him money to allow them to use his name.

Not everything is about your eating preferences, Oerdin.
Nor is everything destined solely to an existing thread, Al.
This is where I first got the news and I appreciate it. Things don't have tone in an ambiguously titled. Thread like your birthday thread from. Ben. Grow up wlile you grow old.

Well, to be fair, he was trying to expand it beyond sports, considering there is a forum for sports stuff.

I'm wondering how many non-Americans even know who this guy is? I don't think I've heard the name before today.

Yeah, never heard of the dude.

We should've had a thread on the world champion 26 year old swimmer who died of a heart attack jerking off in the shower. Much more newsworthy.

If you weren't a patriots or chargers fan (or just a die hard football fan in general) then you likely never heard of him.

No. Junior Seau was one of the greatest linebackers of all time, a definite Hall of Famer, who was one of those players that all football fans just liked, no matter your favorite team. He was also one of the first Polynesian NFL stars.

You don't have to be a die hard fan to know about Junior Seau; just a fan in general.

He only played for 20 years. Even the most casual fan probably is familiar with the name.
As far as non-Americans, so what? Canada probably has a lot more knowledge of moose crap, but I don't.

I'm in the amateur business of knowing who "celebrities" are and I contend this guy just didn't try hard enough. He had to off himself to get noticed.

I doubt there's many football players non-Americans are really aware of to begin with.

A little over a year ago, the NFL did a series on the top 100 NFL players of all time. They also had a top 100 determined by fan vote. How many of these names from the fan top-10 do you not recognize?

    1. Jerry Rice 2. Joe Montana 3. Walter Payton 4. Barry Sanders 5. Peyton Manning 6. Brett Favre 7. Dan Marino 8. John Elway 9. Jim Brown 10. Emmitt Smith.

His restaurant/sports bar isn't even a very good place to go catch a game because the place is just giant with the acoustics of an old warehouse so you're more likely to hear the drunk group next to you being loud than you are to hear what's going on in the game. Worse, the best tables (right in front of the screen) are VIP only so unless you feel like paying $18 for a rather bland subpar burger with crappy pre-cut frozen fries which they reheated than you get stuffed into the far corner. It's no wonder none of the locals go there and instead they survive off of swindling visiting sports fans and tourists.

Before they did the remodel to add in the "VIP area" they just had a bunch of tables spread out across the floor in a geometric pattern so it had all the charm of a college cafeteria but at least you could actually get a seat in front of the screen back then (though you still couldn't hear ****).

The man is dead but you feel it appropriate to use this time to post a negative review on his restaurant. Really?

Hmm, he killed himself so it's obvious he didn't care what other people think least of all his family or fans.

Let's see what the autopsy says about chronic traumatic encephalopathy from his playing days. He's the second retired NFL player to commit suicide in the past two weeks and there's a growing litany of former players who have committed suicide or died recklessly and autopsy results showed they suffered severe neurological damage (Dave Duerson, Chris Henry, Justin Strzelczyk, Andre Waters, etc. etc.)

Junior, Ray Easterling, and Dave Duerson all committed suicide by shooting themselves in the chest. Duerson even left a suicide note asking for his brain to be examined.

His mother is understandably upset at the press conference.

Why is his mother holding a press conference?

NFL players who deal with concussion-induced neurological problems and want to preserve their brains for the autopsy.

It's possible Seau was doing what Dave Duerson did last year:

Former Chicago Bears safety Dave Duerson also committed suicide a year ago, shooting himself in the chest after having made arrangements to donate his brain to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University's School of Medicine. A researcher determined Duerson suffered from a "moderately advanced" case of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The study indicated the damage to Duerson's brain affected his judgment, inhibition, impulse control, mood and memory.

Let's not forget that in 2010, Junior Seau ran his SUV over a cliff in a suspected suicide attempt but survived.
