What do you think? Gross marrying such a young girl or good on him for snagging something that will stay bonable for ages?
51 YEAR-OLD ACTOR MARRIES 16-YEAR-OLD
June 21, 2011,
He's a B-grade American actor, having starred alongside Tom Hanks in 'The Green Mile,' and she's a former beauty pageant queen who is now aspiring to be a country singer.
Sounds like a pretty stereotypical Hollywood couple, except he is 51, and she is 16.
Doug Hutchison married Courtney Stodden in Las Vegas – how fitting - last month, with the teenager now working to position herself as a potential Nashville star after running for Miss Teen Washington USA last year.
How is this legal you ask?
In the United States the 'age of majority' – or age when minors become legally independent form their parents – is 18. Some states are even more stringent, holding the legal age of adulthood as 19 or even 21.
However, this age can be lowered in situations where for example the teen graduates from high school early or has permission from parents. And this is this case for Courtney Stodden.
A spokeswoman for the couple did not respond to questions; however Courtney's mother, Krista Stodden, explained that she signed a consent form so that her daughter could marry Hutchison.
Krista told Radar: "They are very much in love and we are so supportive of this."
The documentation is important for the marriage, as without it the union would not be legal.
Family law specialist and Nachshin & Langlois partner, Joe Langlois, said: "If there was a valid parental consent, then they're now legally married in every way.
"There are no magic words involved, just, essentially, 'I, the parent, give consent,'" Langlois confirmed.
The only possibly legal glitch that the couple may face is that Courtney Stodden's father did not sign the legal consent form. If he is her legal guardian, it is possible that the marriage can be nullified.
While time will tell how long this marriage lasts, the newlyweds have stood up against the storm of controversy that they have ignited.
"We're aware that our vast age difference is extremely controversial," the couple said through their spokeswoman.
"But we're very much in love and want to get the message out there that true love can be ageless."
If they make it to their 50th wedding anniversary, we wonder if Hutchison will be able to dance the 'funky chicken' at age 101.
