The earlier in the game you start scheming and planning, the better you do. It seems. I'm off to a good start after 10 minutes, haha.

When the world is loading the number will be shown at the end of the process. Or ingame, click on your portrait in the top left corner and click on the tab "my games"(or something along those lines).

I am in 151 also (AdamC in the Japanese Shogunate). Although I'm just experimenting at the moment. Learning the best ways to lay out my buildings, figuring what to focus on, just how to do things in general. Oh, and what can you do with great people besides help build wonders?

The great people you own give you a bonus to resource production. e.g. the Great Prophet I currently own is giving me a +5% bonus for food production (in addition to the 25% era bonus). You can also sell 'em, but that seems silly unless you really need something else.

Maybe it's because of your location. I have never had a problem (I live near Chicago).

Perhaps. It's much more stable at uni than at my place. And it's 100x more stable in IE than in FF or Chrome, wherever I might be. That points to piss poor programming, or at least old school.

Wow. Overnight I went from the #21 player to the #11 player... and I still don't even really have that solid of a grasp at what I'm doing in the game!

Suggestion for an improvement: joined queues, allowing you to easily pre-design a civ by putting friends together in a team and then joining the entire team for a game when ready.

I had the same feeling. I guess it is a worthwile attempt but not that different from the other games like grepolis....boring. I played three games but the feelig didn't change. Maybe the city map should have something to explore or a barbarian to kill...anything....I'm... not having fun.
