Ozzy, I've got my old Athlon 2600 that I was hoping to use for such things but it overheats and constantly restarts itself. I'm a bit of a PC hobbyist (despite having got that new iMac) SO I'll tinker around with parts from various old PC's - don't hold your breath.

With the iMac running Win 7, I reboot into the Mac daily so no good as Pitboss server

I turn it on, and I hear it doing something. The fan is spinning, but no light shows up on the front. I can't open the CD drives. Nothing shows up at all on the monitor. Ugh.

Perhaps check out if all cables inside are plugged in well enough.
perhaps some things got loose during your journey.

The cd driver should open without much need, all it needs to be is plugged in, and since the fan runs, there apparently is electricity in it. Thus first check if the cd plug is plugged in well enough. Just open it, it's not difficult.

Ok, I popped off the case, and almost gave up after not seeing anything unplugged. Then I found it! The processor was loose. I popped that in and I think it is working now.

Now what do I do? Walk me through CS.

Hmm, I got the pitboss server program, but it won't install. I get an error message. Does it not work on Windows 2000?

Is there another version I should get? Help!

+1 for fixing your own hardware problems!

The pitboss server should work on win2000, af far as I know.
Did you use the usual pitboss.exe in the bts folder?
    Is the game patched already?

Ah, hehe, oops, I didn't install the game yet. Ok, this may take a bit. Have to make some room on this 12 GB monster.

I have a computer in the front bedroom that does nothing but act as a server for the wireless network in my house. It's possible it could be made the pitboss server, if need be.

Oh, that may work. Wouldn't hurt to get started installing the game on it. I'm going to (hopefully) get Civ installed on mine tonight. So we should find out soon whether or not mine will work.

I have everything installed. The game itself won't run because the video isn't working, but the pitboss controls a game just fine; my laptop can log in by LAN and play. Will need to make sure that someone from outside can log in to an IP game...

First things first, let's make sure that getting into Civ IV on the computer from outside works. I'll put up a game by 1930 hours EST. I'll also post the IP here by then.

After some work with the router, I believe the necessary ports are open. I was able to log into the game as Japan (Tokugawa), and am currently waiting for you to become Izzy.

Logged in and it worked great.

Lets give RFC a try now. Anyone else available right now for some testing?

Ok, bad news folks. Dubhghlas and I tried both the regular RFC that comes with BTS and the RFC-MP version. Both resulted in OOS errors.

When we first played RFC-MP we played for a while and everything worked great. But as soon as we tried to log out and pick a different civ things went OOS. Then we couldn't even pick our original civ again.

It seems Rhye's is a bust. Sorry.

So, the vote also approved another mod (but not Colonization). So now we need to find another mod that is compatible with Pitboss.

After a fair amount of testing on my part tonight, it appears that last night's issues may have had less to do with RFC, and more to do with my cable modem. After a cable modem reset, and some testing, I have been able to access an MP game of RFC, and have played it for several turns, and have been able to log out and back in successfully, without any OOS issues. So it might be worth trying the experiment again.

I just played the SP version of RFC that comes with BTS and loved it - many changes. Upgrading units far cheaper btw (Warrior to Axe = 40 gold). This improves game play I'd suggest. Brilliant map. I played the Chinese at Monarch level and now the top civ - still going though as not achieved any goals yet

The only thing I don't like is the succession side but Iliked seeing civs born at historical times. I prefer competitive games.

Maybe we could also look at that modpak Capo was putting together?

Or perhaps ozzy could refine the RFC map?

Yea, RFC is awesome. It is definitely important for everyone to play around with it some on your own, there have been plenty of changes. I'm not sure what I could or should do to refine the map. The map is a pretty important part of the game, tinkering with it would throw things out of whack.

I really hope we can do Rhys.

    A few things I like:

    * religion can't be expanded too easily
    * land settling can't be expanded beyond historical bases
    * easy to build armies and develop allowing easier war opportunity
    * The GNP Science/Gold is much more biased to gold; ie you end up around the time of Guilds with 30% science so building Libraries/Unis is less important as modifiers than Markets/Banks because gold is around 70% - because there are so many specials I tended not to build too many cottages which would make a difference of course
    * I like the three objectives set for each civ BUT it does force you down certain tech paths - again historical accuracy

PS The game actually crashed once as SP btw

I think we'd have to skip the unique historical victories for our game. Especially since some civs could complete their UHV's before the rest of us are even in the game.

Guys, I think that I'd better am not participating in two games at the same time. Toni can have my spot. Enjoy it!

You can, but it is more difficult.
I think they cause you to destabilize. Question the stability points you get for diplomacy... how are they calculated? Are they disabled in MP?

Is there a strategy guide or at least manual? (Edit: Found the wiki:http://rhye.civfanatics.net/)

Some of the mechanics aren't really apparent to me and since lots of players will be playtesting this like crazy it would be much better if the rest of us bums can read up on that one and play a game or two before starting with the diplo game.

Also dosen't anyone want to play a test MP game this week?

Modern man calls walking more quickly in the same direction down the same road “change.”
The world, in the last three hundred years, has not changed except in that sense.
The simple suggestion of a true change scandalizes and terrifies modern man. -Nicolás Gómez Dávila

I'm free. We just have to figure out how to do it. Our host seems to be awol. I'll PM him again. We definitely need to do some more testing and then get started! Before we lose momentum!
