I feel as if though you are referencing something in particular because obviously the answer to your question is that it is impossible. So what are you talking about?

Hi al lyou experts in civ 4 MP
Just wondering is it possible to have a nation on your Foriegn affairs list that you have not met. They are on a separate continent, need ocean going vessels to travel the distance, no one advanced to that tech yet.
So how do two tribes meet with out meeting??
Can anyone explain this to me please.

You want specifics?
I was privvy to some rumours about a game that it occured in, I didnt think it was possible. But i no expert in it.
Perhaps it can be built into an EVENT or perhaps into the Script in the game itself , like Starting locations, perhaps an accidental oversight.
All accidental things.
Of course if any of these had occured in any game, I am sure that whomever it happened to would announce this.
So was wondering how it can be done.
Just to stop the rumours.
Someone out there will know how it is possible.

Well I don't think its possible to have a country you have no contact with to be on your foreign advisors list because by virtue of them being on your foreign advisor list you DO, in fact, have contact with them.
But if you mean you never saw their units, your territory isn't touching and in fact it would be scientifically/physically impossible for any contact to have been made and despite these facts they are still on your contact list, well I don't know. Possibility of a Vassal situation? Maybe another country let their vassals go? If this is a scenario maybe the scenario maker screwed up, if this is a single-player game maybe the player popped into the world builder and accidentally put something somewhere it didn't belong. Other than that I dunno, a goold old fashioned computer screw up?
I thought you were referring to our diplogame and a "virtual" foreign advisor.
BTW Ras, come back and post dammit.

it all theoretical until the truth be known.
So know you and i are not the experts here CAPO i await the experts to lay waste to the rumours.
Then we can return to some good stuff.

Raz, I absolutely mean no disrespect to you.
But I have NO IDEA what the hell you are talking about right now?
No, that's not possible.

Sorry Raz, I have no idea how this can be done.
Do you have an example where it is done? Post the save.

If you are talking about our Pitboss a few odd things might have occurred because someone started in the sea! I remember in Civ2 that I did a few scenarios that were odd like that - game corruption I guess. Don't know about Civ 4 though.

Yeah Raz, I don't think anybody knows what you are talking about, so can you just tell us what you are referring to here?
That would help you get your answers, believe me.

It is also possible when doing custom maps. Like the mapmaker may have been placing everyone's starting units and such, and accidentally put a Viking unit next to an Arab unit, and then realized his mistake and deleted the mistake. But then those two civs are still considered to have met each other. It is possible the mapmaker forgot to fix that.Originally posted by deity

I've done something similar with many maps I've made.

Yeah, that's what I said.
But I feel like, for some reason, Raz is talking about a specific incident that for whatever reason he isn't disclosing.

Ok i know little about what causes these things.
but here are the facts.
1. Whilst forming some secret allliances i was given a list of interested civs who could join the allaince.
2. This list contained a civ on another continent.
3. I queried this and was told that no, they must be on our continent as theyhave made contact.
4. I checked the story threadand definatly Celts are not on our continent.
5. So i used this thread to find out if it possible.
6. It appears it was an accident, possible casued by the map maker, he was under a lot of pressure to make the map in time.
7. I believe now that the person involved should step forward and acknowledge this.

Who is in this secret alliance Raz?

It never occured Capo as i was concerned with the off continent link.

It's very well possible that some civs knew each other from the beginning, like Ozzy said.
Civs that aren't supposed to know each other should just ignore each other in-game, don't open borders, don't exchange techs, etc.
There's nothing we can do about it, all we can do is restrain ourselves.

I would have liked the two civs involved to have posted it in the org thread so everyone was aware of it.Originally posted by CyberShy

Why would two civs have contact? That makes no sense. Why would you set it up like that?

ozzy said it above, accidental misakte when making map , palcing starting citys and starting units. once they met unless you rembember and go bsck a nd clear the Script of which civs met who, you stuck with it forever.

Next questions; why is the map maker playing in the game? Why has another player seen the map in advance?

Cause we have 18 players in this game, there aren't that many people left over who could make a map but not play. I don't think it gives the map maker too much of an unfair advantage. I'm not worried.

Yeah but you can't possibly deny that a third party would have been best, and probably relatively easy to get.

And honestly it does Ozzy, they know where resources are (potentially) and they will certainly know where to explore. If you could even refer to that as "exploring."

Capo, with respect, why don't you read over the threads that led to the setting up of this game rather than blowing off all over the place?
The map was created and the civs placed in agreeance with all registered players. It was cleverly done in the most discreet way possible given that third parties were not an option (and you were no where to be seen).
Pinchak did a great job on the map. The civs were placed by anonymous numbers. The map maker knew NOT who was what civ.
It was sent to Cyber for hosting and several errors had to be fixed before the game could get under way.
These two have worked tirelessly to set up and manage a most difficult game with a very difficult group of people - some with inappropriate agendas.
Just accept the things that were agreed, well, for this game anyway.

So far... I LIKE this map. Some minor tweaks would have made it perfect, but then it wouldn't be much of a challenge, so the balance appears to be about right.

Someone likes skull island! In fact I hope there is a skull island! With ALL Uranium.![]()
Joking aside, the intent of it was to create a small area of ULTRA valuable land that would not be realized until late in the game... then watch the sparks fly.
I still imagine it will be hotly contested, but seeing it play out in a more natural way would have been great. That is of course if it exists.
Nuke power when properly managed is one of the most clean power generation methods. Alot of people talk about solar, hydro, and wind, but these don't even come close to the power/investment ratio of nuke. A few of the major world dams come close, but they do a number on the local environment. We are anti Nuke in my country.... Tree huggers
