    • Smart pick by the Fins. I knew he wouldn't have lasted when Atlanta picked (St. Louis would have definately taken him if he fell to them), but it was nice to think about it.

      • Yes, this is the first #1 overall pick I have agreed with since Palmer.

        • Long

Apparently there's some word out of Bears camp that they might go with a certain running back... not sure if I think this is a good idea or not, not because I think they should draft anything but an OT, but because they are so terrible at picking OTs that perhaps it's better to ... oh, wait, Curtis Enis

              • I'm pretty upset, I was really hoping he would go to my Rams.

Hmm. I guess now I hope they trade down. Too many holes to fill. Of course, more draft picks for the rams=more draft busts. ugh.

                • Re: Jake Long

It's a six-year contract. The deal will be voided after five years and includes $30 million guaranteed and $57.5 million in total value. Long gets to hit free agency more quickly than JaMarcus Russell. For that, he but he will get $2 million less in guaranteed money and $3.5 million less in total money.

He's the first offensive lineman drafted in the top spot since Orlando Pace. The Dolphins indicated Long will play left tackle from day one.

Seems like the "other Long" or Glenn Dorsey are the slam-dunk picks for the Rams. Gholston has incredible measurables, but strikes me as more of a workout warrior. Personally, I think they should grab Dorsey and move Carriker out to DE.

Or find someone who knows what they want and trade down a bit.

Barring a trade, if the Bears do anything other than take the best OT available, then they are idiots. This is one of those rare years where there are at least 5 legitimate offensive tackles with first-round grades, and it's clearly the team's biggest area of need.

                      Shockingly:
-at 14th overall, at least one of these elite OTs will be available
-OT is the position with the lowest statistical chance of being a 1st-round bust.

There's a reason you rarely see Pittsburgh or NE drafting in the top 10. The long-term elite teams build themselves around great linemen. Much as I would love to see Mendenhall or Stewart in Chicago, without a massive upgrade in the O-line, no Bears RB or QB can expect to succeed.

The Bears' history with 1st-round OTs isn't that bad.
Marc Columbo, 2002, 29th overal -- had nasty injury problems while here, but now a consistent starter in Dallas
Stan Thomas, 1991, 22nd overall -- clearly a bust. And FWIW, this pick has been acknowledged as a reach, with McCaskey overruling the coaching staff.
Jim Covert, 1983, 6th overall -- great player
Keith Van Horne, 1981, 11th overall -- great player

So there you have it. Logic, reason and history all say the Bears MUST take an offensive tackle with their first pick this year.

Which means they will probably draft Mendenhall or Stewart

                        • History says it's been 25 years since the Bears took a good player in the 1st round at OT Unfortunately, it's not position-specific, but just in general the Bears suck in the 1st round. They make some great choices later on, though...

                          • The classic example of that is 2003, when they traded down so they could get TWO 1st-round busts (Michael Haynes and Rex). Then they got Peanut Tillman in the 2nd and Lance Briggs in the 3rd.

Recent Bears 1st-round picks that were NOT a failure
2008 - TE Greg Olsen (too soon to tell)
2002 - OT Marc Columbo (now with Dallas)
                            2000 - LB Brian Urlacher
                            1996 - CB Walt Harris
                            1990 - FS Mark Carrier
                            1989 - CB Donnell Woolford

There are some guys who had marginal success, like Curtis Conway and Alonzo Spellman, as well. But in terms of All-Pros... in the last 20 years, it's basically Urlacher. I think Carrier made it a couple times.

20-year success rate is basically 30%. So set your expectations low.
