    Most "Unbreakable" Sports Record

The pro football thread got me thinking about Johnny Unitas and the "unbreakable" record he holds of 47 consecutive games with a touchdown pass.

There are many such "unbreakable" records in sports. Which one do you think is the most "unbreakable"?

Of those, I'd go with Cy Young. I doubt Brown's record will be beaten, either.

Pitchers in the MLB today get 30 decisions, max, for each season. A pitcher who went 30-0 for seventeen years would still be short.

Clearly Cy Young. Every other record there could theoretically be broken; no pitcher will win 25 games a year for 20 years with the 5 man rotation.

I'd go one further and say that Old Hoss Radbourn has the most truly unbreakable record - 59 wins in a season. (Or Jack Chesbro (41) if you want to limit it to 1900+). Again, no pitcher even pitches in 40 games as a starter, and it's not realistic for a reliever to win more than 20 (in fact it's never been done).

Gretzky: 92 goals in a season
Bobby Orr: 139 points (by a defenseman)
Goals by a rookie: 72 (Selanne)
    Career shutouts: 103 (Sawchuk)

Yeah...you have a point. I realized after I posted the poll how heavily biased it was.

    Sorry Hockey fans.

Gretzky should get his own thread anyway...How many other players are known simply as "The Great One"?

Cy Young is the clear choice.
I voted for the 2nd. Longest streak of throwing at least 1 touchdown pass per game: Johnny Unitas, 47 games

I voted for Cy Young's record, but did Wilt actually have 55 rebounds in one game?! Holy crap!

UCLA winning the big dance 7 times in a row will never be broken. Maybe a school wins 4 if they get a good group of freshmen that actually stay the entire time, but never 7.

Unitas played in 12 game years. That's a TD pass per game for 4 years, in an era not really all that pass oriented.

I also voted for Cy Young's record, but I gotta say, Richard Petty winning 27 races in one Nascar season sounds pretty unbeatable. Especially now, when they have rules and stuff...

    Cy Young, CLEARLY.

55 rebounds is big, extremely unlikely to be broken, but no way is anyone getting near Cy Young.

I don't think any of those are really out of reach. Specially not Sawchuk. The single season shutout record, maybe.

Cy Young is the most impossible option in the poll

Cy Young and DiMaggio are the two "unbreakable" baseball records... with Cy Young's probably being safer. Most games won by a pitcher in a season is almost certainly safe as well. Even if they someday go back to a 4-man rotation (possible, if unlikely), hardly anyone wins 20 games in a season now. So what if you bump that barrier up to ~25 games? It's still not gonna get you close.

I don't really know enough about the other sports to comment.

    Some great records here...
However, I feel a few of them can be broken, while many won't.

-Longest streak of throwing at least 1 touchdown pass per game: Johnny Unitas, 47 games

    Brady could beat this one

-Most seasons leading the NFL in rushing yards: Jim Brown, 8

A good record, and will be difficult to beat because it requires a superstar to stay healthy... but I don't think it's unbreakable

-Most touchdown passes thrown in a season: Peyton Manning, 49

    Will probably fall this year

-Most points, single game: Wilt Chamberlain, 100
Even the greedy and selfish Coby can't get close to this one now... so unless the game changes dramatically, this one is safe.

-Most rebounds single game: Wilt Chamberlain, 55
I didn't remember this one... I don't think this one can be beat either. Unless there is an 8 footer somewhere

-Most seasons leading the league in scoring: Michael Jordan, 10

While this is impressive, I think this one can be beat.

-Most career wins: Cy Young, 511

For the reasons many have already stated, this will always be the record.

-Longest hitting streak: Joe DiMaggio, 56 games
Again... an impressive record, but I see this as one that can beat.

-Most consecutive games played: Cal Ripken, 2,632
Another one that can be beat, but still a great record

-UCLA Bruins: 7 consecutive NCAA basketball titles
With the expanded field of teams, I don't see how anybody can beat this one. Just going back to back in impressive, 7 is impossible.

-Oklahoma Sooners: 47 consecutive NCAA Division 1-A football victories

This is one of those records that I think will be very difficult to beat. With players able to opt out to the NFL early, it's hard to keep those dynasties going. However, it wouldn't totally surprise me if somebody did it.

-Richard Petty: Winning 27 NASCAR races in one season
I also really can't put this one in perspective since I don't follow NASCAR. It sounds good, but who knows.

what about wayne gretzky's most points all time?

he has 970 more points than the 2nd place person...that is absolutely insane.

Eventually the NHL is going to realize that Americans love scoring, and make the net 2' wider and 1' higher. Then the scores will be in the range of 40-35 every game

cool poll and thread. One of those will obviously be broken this season barring injury. Most TD's in a season.

The NFL ones look flimsy. though I'm more versed in NFL versus the other sports I don't know that much about as I don't follow them at all anymore. So I'm fairly certain most of those NFL records will fall. The Jim Brown one will be tough as it's hard to maintain #1 as a running back in this league with the competition, but it could happen.

NBA. Those wilt records seem impossible to break. Michael Jordon has came close in scoring. The scoring one could possibly be broken. But the rebounds? I voted for the boards, as most players concentrate more on scoring, so I doubt the rebound record will be broken.

That Cy young record looks pretty unbreakable. And I can see after I voted that most of you voted for that. Pitchers pitch less games than they used to I believe, so I can't see this one being broken. But I still voted 55 boards.

cal ripken's records is tough, but it's possible it could be broken.

UCLA and Petty's records will stand quite a while as well. I can't see them being broken in my lifetime. Too much competition these days.

Maybe it's not as easy record to beat as some of us thought.
I just looked up how Manning and Brady are doing.
Neither of them has been able to go an entire season with a touchdown pass in every game. (granted, both have thrown at least one in every game this year)

The best streak Brady has had to date is only 12 games.

So maybe this record is better than we think

No sport has been dominated as much by one player like Gretzky, ever. That deserves mentioning.

interesting about Johnny U's record. I figured Manning and/or Brady would be fairly close to that record. With such strong defenses in the NFL today it isn't easy for sure. Not to mention free agents. Looking at the Patriots offense right now, no one can stop them for an entire game. Colts did it for 3 quarters, couldn't go the whole way. The problem is with free agents they won't be able to maintain the recievers they have 4 years down the road. But if Randy Moss stays... who knows.

I'm trying to find more info on that rebound breaking game. All I can find is that he lost that game, despite all those boards.

Just shows that one man can't carry a team like that, you need an entire team to win. Another amazying record is he averaged over 50 points per game in an entire season! . There have been some rules changes since him, like widening of the lane. Which would make those records a little more hard to break.

He also went his entire career without fouling out of a game.

wow, I didn't realize what the final score of the game was. Holy cow! You just don't see high scoring games like that now days. I guess they had no defense back then.

If he gets that many rebounds it tells you nobody else on the team is rebounding worth @$^@...
