Charming, aren't they? Yet, the media (least of all FOX News) consistently fails to cry "FOUL!!1" when they protest at funerals for gays. All you're doing is giving them legitimacy by putting them on the air or in newsprint. Screw'em, let them rant and rave themselves into obscurity. The entire church consists of one family, likely inbred, that will eventually die off. Unlike Revs. Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell, both of whom and their ilk exert real political power and influence, this group is not even worth responding to much less getting worked up over.

Though, don't misunderstand me. I would like to see an article in the paper about their bus careening off a cliff while on their way to yet another protest, killing the whole group. That would be newsworthy.

My computer has no sound, hence I'm not going to bother playing the video, but if this is the Westboro Baptist Church or whichever one it is that runs www.godhatesfags.com (and if they're picketing funerals, you probably are), they aren't actually Baptist. Those guys were actually rejected by their local Baptist synod. They're just appropriating the name anyway. Not that I like Baptist beliefs as such, but it's not fair to blame the Baptists for those freaks any more than it's fair to blame democracy for "The Democratic Republic of North Korea."

No, you don't, Ves. They thrive off attention. At their current pace, as has already been pointed out in this thread, they're going to die out anyway. They're insular, they ooze bad publicity, and there are too few of them to perpetuate their church any longer without massive inbreeding. One way or another, the poor dumb schleps are headed the way of Waco. They've even got a little compound they've holed themselves up in. One almost pities them, until one realizes that they celebrate after every catastrophe in the news.

Knowing that...well, now I just see this as a no-win situation for my faith in humanity. They're too pitiful to hate, but too hateful to pity. I just hope they go quickly and painlessly when the inevitable happens. And hopefully some of the kids and younger members will escape to recover from their life in that madhouse. Waco was totally messed up.

Their whole schtick is to hide behind free speech. They're a bunch of attorneys. Violence would be very out of character.

What interview? The "interviewed" didn't really respond to the questions and the "journalists" didn't feel ashamed to get into mud catching. That was infotainment, but no interview.

I don't think so, unless this group is only driven by getting audience. If so, you're probably right. But I think they're rather driven by genuine hate and zeal, thinking that, well, God hates America. This is manifest by crossing a line, such as invading a funeral, which by almost everyone, including the "average" fundamentalist, would consider more than sick.
Generally, fundamentalists at least try to appear completely sane and on air try to argue that what they do is "common sense". Not so them.
If God really hates America so much, it may be time for "real action", including violence and terrorism. I don't say it will happen, but it very well can turn into that.

In person? If so, I know none (well that is, except for one Iranian who used to be a communist and now is a muslim fundie). But yes, via TV I've seen a whole bunch of extremists who tried to appear as decent people in order to make politics, while their ideas actually were pretty sick. It's like those creationists who try to sneak in Inteligent Design by covering it as science, so more people are willing to support the idea.

I don't think they're that predictable. Anyway, America can expect a few homegrown terrorist attacks with all the alienated veterans coming back from Iraq. Probably not related to Phelps' gang, though.
